Elon Falls At Ranked Drexel In Final Regular Season Matchup

ELON, N.C. – After battling back to enter halftime tied with No. 23 Drexel, Elon couldn't keep pace in the second half, as the Dragons pulled away for a 16-7 win to close out the regular season. Ana Lee Vandiver led the Phoenix offense, scoring four of the team's seven goals.

Elon wraps up the regular season at 9-7 overall and 5-3 in conference play and will meet the tournament host, Stony Brook, in the CAA Semifinals on May 1. With the win, Drexel finishes the 2025 regular season 13-3 overall and 7-1 in CAA play, completing an undefeated home slate in conference games. The Dragons earn the No. 2 seed in the CAA Tournament and will face Delaware in the CAA Semifinals. Both matchups will be rematches of last year's semifinal slate.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Drexel opened the contest on a 3-0 run and controlled the pace early, winning all six draw controls in the first quarter.
  • Elon broke through with a minute left in the opening frame with a goal from Sammy Fisher, marking the fourth straight contest where she netted the Phoenix's first goal.
  • The Dragons responded quickly, scoring twice across the end of the first quarter and start of the second to extend the lead to 5-1.
  • Elon's offense found its rhythm late in the half, rattling off four goals in the final seven minutes of the second quarter. Ana Lee Vandiver sparked the surge with two scores, including the game-tying goal with 33 seconds left, to send the teams into halftime tied at 5-5.
  • Drexel struck first out of the break, but Vandiver stayed hot, completing her hat trick and tying the game again at 6-6 with ten minutes to play in the third.
  • The Dragons answered with a quick burst, scoring twice within 39 seconds to pull ahead 8-6. Bridget Finley tallied her third of the day to complete her hat trick during the run.
  • Drexel kept its momentum, adding three more goals to close the third quarter on a 5-0 run and building an 11-6 advantage heading into the final frame. Kate Marano capped the stretch with her third goal, notching a hat trick and two assists for five points through three quarters.
  • Allison Drake opened the fourth quarter with her third goal of the afternoon, becoming the third Dragon to record a hat trick and extending Drexel's lead to 12-6.
  • The Drexel defense held Elon scoreless for nearly 15 minutes spanning the third and fourth quarters before Ana Lee Vandiver ended the drought with her fourth goal, cutting the deficit to 13-7.
  • Drexel closed the game on a 3-0 run to secure the 16-7 victory, finishing with three players tallying four or more points, led by Kate Marano's six-point performance, including three goals and three assists
NOTES AND STATS
  • Ana Lee Vandiver led the Phoenix with four goals, including Elon's only two scores of the second half. She also paced the team with three ground balls.
  • Sammy Fisher, Mia Zebley, and Addie Gilner each added a goal for Elon.
  • Cierra Hopson recorded the Phoenix's lone assist in the contest.
  • Fisher and Eliza Ritter each tallied two caused turnovers to lead the defense.
  • Elon lost the draw control battle for just the fourth time this season, falling 16-10. Fisher and MJ Santa Barbara each secured four draw controls.
  • Caitlin Walsh recorded eight saves and posted a .333 save percentage in between the pipes for the Phoenix.
  • Elon finished a near-perfect 17-of-18 (94.4%) on clears.
UP NEXT
  • Elon will return to the CAA Tournament for the second consecutive season and will face tournament host No. 20 Stony Brook in the semifinals on May 1 at noon. The winner will advance to the CAA Championship, scheduled for May 3 at 12:30 p.m.
