Elon, N.C.- The Elon Phoenix (19-25) saw their four-game winning streak come to a close on Tuesday night with a 4-2 loss to the East Carolina Pirates (26-19). ECU takes the midweek series with the Phoenix in 2025 after two competitive games in Greenville and Elon.
Â
Owen Winebarger delivered two innings of perfect relief in the eighth and ninth innings to keep the Phoenix within a pair of runs.
Carson Wehner tossed an inning and two-thirds scoreless relief in the loss to ECU.
Â
How It Happened
- The Phoenix got out of an early jam with Tommy Mitchell inducing a double play ball that Elon would use to turn two and get out of a bases loaded jam.
- Elon and ECU would both strike in the second inning with a pair of runs. The Pirates found a pair in the top of the inning, scoring on a sacrifice bunt and then a double.
- In the bottom of the second inning, Elon turned ECU miscues into runs. Elon got the inning started with a double from Charlie Granatell and a single from Will Vergantino to put runners on the corners. After a Kenny Mallory Jr. walk, Vince Fattore drove in the run from third on a groundball down the third base line. Elon tied the score when Mallory used his speed to take third on a steal which forced a bad throw from the ECU catcher which allowed Mallory to score.
- The two teams continued to get out of jams in the third and fourth innings before ECU added a run in the fifth.
- Elon's bullpen continued to find outs before the Pirates were able to score a fourth run with some heads up baserunning to score from first base on a single.
- The Phoenix offense could not find another run against the ECU bullpen which would give ECU the 4-2 win.
