Williamsburg, Va.- The Elon Phoenix (10-19, 2-5 CAA) held a 3-0 lead halfway through their Friday night bout with the William & Mary Tribe (11-18, 5-2 CAA) before the bottom of the fifth turned the game upside down. The Tribe brought home seven runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a lead they would not relinquish Friday night.
Â
How It Happened
- The Phoenix and Tribe entered what would look to be a pitcher's duel in the first three innings with both starters taking control early.
- Elon broke through in the run column in the fourth inning with a trio of runs. After a leadoff single from Vince Fattore and a Kenny Mallory Jr. walk, Will Vergantino laid down a sacrifice bunt that the Tribe defense couldn't handle. Both runners would score on the errant throw to give Elon a 2-0 lead.
- In his return to Plumeri Park, Tank Yaghoubi singled home Vergantino following the two-runs scored to give Elon a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the fourth.
- Justin Mitrovich was in control in the bottom of the fifth before the Tribe countered with seven, unanswered runs to take a 7-3 lead after five.
- Elon plated a run in the seventh with an RBI fielder's choice from Mallory Jr. to get to within three runs of W&M.
- W&M added an insurance run in the eighth and Elon could not find another run in the ninth. William & Mary took game one, 8-4 Friday night.
