ELON, N.C. – Behind a career-high six strikeouts for sophomore
Anna Dew, the Elon University softball team earned a 5-1 victory over College of Charleston in its CAA series finale on Sunday, April 6, at Hunt Softball Park.
Elon (20-14, 12-3 CAA) earned its third series win via a sweep while also extending its home winning streak to 11 games. The sweep kept the Phoenix in a tie for first place in the CAA standings with Campbell at 12-3. Charleston falls to 18-22 overall and 9-6 in league play.
In the Circle
• Dew (2-3) earned her second win of the weekend in the circle, pitching a complete-game performance in the finale. The Harrisburg, N.C., native set a new career-high in strikeouts (six) while scattering four hits to the Cougars versus one walk.
At the Plate
• Elon had six hits as a team with
Greta Hessenthaler and
Lani Wyrick tying for the team-lead in hits for the Phoenix, with the pair both going 2-of-3 at the dish. Hessenthaler drove in two RBI and added a triple to her stat line, her third of the season. She has now reached base in 33 straight games while recording her ninth multi-hit contest of the season.
The Rundown
• The Phoenix had an opportunity to strike first in the bottom of the first. Hessenthaler led off the game with a triple down the left field line and was joined on the bases by
Allee Seering after a walk. Seering then moved to second on the play to give the Phoenix runners in scoring position with no outs. The next three batters were retired however on a grounder, a line out and a foul out to leave the runners stranded.
• Charleston answered with a run in the top of the second. The Cougars reached on a leadoff single and then advanced to second on a sac bunt. Elon was able to strikeout the next batter for the second out, but CofC drove a single into left center to plate the first run and take a 1-0 lead.
• Elon answered with a three-run home half of the second.
Chloe Hatzopoulos reached on a walk to start the inning before being joined on the bases by
Mary Moss Wirt on an error off a bunt. The pair moved into scoring position after a sac bunt before the bases were loaded on a
Lani Wyrick bunt. Hatzopoulos and Wirt scored on a Hessenthaler single down the right field line with Wyrick moving to third. Wyrick was driven home on an
Allee Seering sac fly to give the Phoenix a 3-1 lead.
• The maroon and gold added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth frame.
Peyton Fitzpatrick reached on an error and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Wirt then reached on an error with one out, enabling Fitzpatrick to score with Wirt taking her place at second.
Kayla Wilson then drove in Wirt as the pinch hitter doubled down the left field line, increasing the Phoenix's advantage to 5-1.
• Dew would set the Cougars down in order in the top of the seventh, securing the Phoenix's 5-1 victory and the series sweep over Charleston.
On Deck
• The Phoenix travels to Drexel next weekend, April 11-13, for its next CAA series.
