Women’s Tennis Powers Past UNCG in Midweek Victory

Elon, N.C. - The Elon University women's tennis team defeated UNC Greensboro Wednesday by a score of 6-1 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center. The victory marks Elon's fourth straight win, improving their record to 15-5, surpassing the team's 14 wins from a year ago. Elon is just one win shy of its 2023 total and has not won more than 15 regular season matches since posting 16 in 2021. UNCG falls to 3-17 with the loss.

The Phoenix won all three doubles matches, sweeping the doubles point. The team then won 5-of-6 singles matches, resulting in a final score of 6-1.

To begin doubles, the standout duo of Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding won 6-0 against UNCG's Olivia Gallagher and Alexandra Dodashev. This is Bergeron and Reding's eighth straight victory as a doubles pair. To secure the doubles point, Miray Konar and Heidi Bulger defeated Lauren Thomson and Ella Olexa 6-3. Finishing third and completing the sweep, Helen Sarikulaya and Lisa Kranec beat Sydney Bly and Raegan Mitchell 6-2.

Already up 1-0, Elon continued the domination as Bergeron quickly defeated UNCG's Olivia Gallagher 6-1, 6-0. Next to Bergeron, on court two, Mariana Reding faced Alexandra Dodashev. Dodashev came out strong, gaining a 3-0 lead on Reding. Reding quickly responded, ending the set with a 7-5 win. Dodashev then withdrew due to injury, giving Elon a 3-0 lead.

To clinch the match, Lisa Kranec defeated Luna Urso 6-2, 6-1, increasing her singles record to 15-2. On court three, Helen Sarikulaya faced Lauren Thomson, winning the first set 6-0, then losing the second 6-2, leading to a tiebreak. UNCG secured its only point of the day as Thomson won the tiebreaker over Sarikulaya 10-4. Heidi Bulger collected Elon's fifth point, defeating Sydney Bly 6-3, 6-2.

To close out the match, Madison Cordisco defeated UNCG's Elisabeth Birkevold. Birkevold started the match strong, winning the first set 6-2. Cordisco quickly responded, tying the match with her 6-2 victory. Cordisco fought for the Phoenix's sixth and final point of the day, winning the tiebreaker 10-3.
