Softball Quintet Named to the CSC Academic All-District® Team

ELON, N.C. – The Elon University softball team had five members of its program earn sports on the College Sports Communicators (CSC), formerly CoSIDA, Academic All-District® team for softball, announced by the organization on Tuesday, May 27.

Graduating seniors Chloe Hatzopoulos, McKenna McCard, Gabi Schaal and Kaitlyn Wells earned spots on the All-District team as did Phoenix sophomore Greta Hessenthaler. The 2025 Academic All-District® Softball Teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances on the diamond and in the classroom.

Hessenthaler, McCard and Wells were selected as CSC Academic All-America® finalists and will advance to the national ballot to be voted on by CSC members. First-, second- and third-team Academic All-America® honorees will be announced June 17.

Wells adds to her laundry list of postseason accomplishments in honor of her historic 2025 senior campaign. She led the Phoenix in a number of offensive categories, including batting average (.417), hits (70), slugging percentage (.774), home runs (16) and RBI (59), breaking the program's single-season school record in the latter two categories. She also earned All-CAA accolades during the season and was placed on the Second Team. McCard set a career and CAA-high this season with 15 strikeouts at North Carolina A&T on April 18, notching the most strikeouts for a Phoenix pitcher since 2011. She was rewarded as the CAA Co-Pitcher of the Week and became the first Elon pitcher to receive All-Region honors since Abbey Barker in 2019.

Hessenthaler is pursuing her degree in business and has posted a 4.0 GPA during her time at Elon. The Liberty, N.C., native finished second in batting average (.354) and was third overall in runs scored (38) and hits (56). She led the team with 32 walks and two triples. She reached base in all but one of the 53 games that she appeared in including a streak of 34 games. She was later named First Team All-CAA.

An exercise science major with a 3.79 GPA, Hatzopoulos also earned All-CAA accolades on the season, landing on the league's Second Team. The Huntersville, N.C., native finished in the top 10 of the CAA in slugging percentage (.562), runs scored (43) and home runs (11). She became the second player in school history to have two double-digit home run campaigns in their career, joining Carleigh Nester. Schaal, a fifth-year who graduated as a biology major with a 3.852 GPA, rounds out the Phoenix honorees.
