Elon Shuts Out Davidson To Cap Perfect Homestand

Pair Of First-Half Goals Lift Phoenix To 2-0 Victory

ELON – The Elon University men's soccer team (5-0-1) capped off a perfect three-game homestand Tuesday night with a 2-0 victory over Davidson (2-3-1) at Rudd Field.

The unbeaten Phoenix scored both its goals in the first half, with Martin Kozak and Oscar Tonidandel both netting their first goals with Elon. Jackson Leavitt recorded his fourth straight shutout in goal and fifth clean sheet of the season with three saves.

Elon finishes its homestand with a 3-0-0 record. The Phoenix is yet to allow a goal in four matches at Rudd this season.

How It Happened
  • Elon earned a penalty kick in the sixth minute when Dominik Renz was tackled in the box by a Davidson defender. Kozak took the penalty for the Phoenix, burying it in the lower left corner for the game's first goal.
  • Leavitt saw his first action of the night in the 30th minute, denying Davidson's Brady McGlone on a low attempt.
  • The Phoenix applied offensive pressure in the closing minutes of the first half and were rewarded in the 45th minute. After winning the ball on the end line, Connor Mucchetti lifted it back toward the top of the box toward an open Tonidandel, who knocked it out of the air and toward the goal. The ball rolled to the right goal post and bounced into the net with 27 seconds left for Elon's second goal of the contest.
  • Elon continued to create chances early in the second half, the best of which came from Einar Ness in the 53rd minute that was turned away by Davidson goalie Lucas Beltran.
  • The Phoenix limited Davidson to just two shot attempts in the second half, the second of which came in the 89th minute, an effort that Leavitt easily corralled to help put the finishing touches Elon's clean sheet.

Notes & Numbers
  • Kozak's goal was Elon's first on a penalty kick this season. Kozak took Elon's only other attempt of the season at Radford on Sept. 2.
  • The penalty kick goal was the first for Elon since Scott Vatne converted against Northeastern on Oct. 26, 2024.
  • The goal was Kozak's first as a Phoenix to go along with his three assists on the season. His five points trail only Renz for the most on the team.
  • Tonidandel notched his first goal and points with the Phoenix. It was his lone shot attempt of the night in 52 minutes of action.
  • Mucchetti delivered an assist on Tonidandel's goal, his second straight match with a helper. He joins Kozak (3) and Colin Veltri (2) with multiple assists on the campaign.
  • Elon outshot Davidson, 9-4. Five of Elon's attempts found the target, with six different players recording a shot on goal.
  • Majaliwa Msabaha, Weston Jonke and Magnus Jacobsen all logged the full 90 minutes for the Phoenix. It was Jonke's first time playing a full match this season.
  • Leavitt stopped all three of Davidson's shots on goal for his fourth straight shutout and fifth of the season. Leavitt and the Phoenix have not allowed a goal in the last 289:07 of game action.
  • The Phoenix has posted four consecutive shutouts for the first time since 2023.
  • Elon has now held five of its six opponents this season to single-digit shots. Davidson's four shot attempts matched the lowest Elon has allowed this season.
  • The match featured 30 combined fouls, with Davidson edging Elon, 17-13.
  • In total, 20 Elon players saw the field. Jordin Wilson made his first start since Elon's season opener against Old Dominion.
  • Elon outshot its opponents 40-21 during its three-game homestand.
