Elon Stays Unbeaten In CAA Play With Draw At William & Mary

Phoenix, Tribe Tie 1-1 In Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Elon University men's soccer team (5-0-2, 2-0-1) continued its unbeaten start to the season Saturday night in Williamsburg, earning a 1-1 draw against CAA opponent William & Mary (0-4-3, 0-2-1 CAA).

Martin Kozak netted his second goal of the season in the second half to put the Phoenix on the board, but the Tribe tied the score later in the period with a successful penalty kick. The tie was Elon's first in conference play this season after winning its first two CAA contests.

The William & Mary penalty kick was the first goal scored against Elon since Aug. 30 at UNCW, snapping a shutout streak of just over 357 minutes.

How It Happened
  • The first half featured just two combined shot attempts, both by William & Mary. The first shot in the sixth minute required a Jackson Leavitt save.
  • The Phoenix and Tribe combined for 10 fouls in the opening frame, which ended scoreless.
  • Elon found the scoresheet quickly in the second half on its first opportunity of the match. After an initial shot by Jordin Wilson, Elon's first of the night, Martin Kozak put home the first goal of the game to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.
  • Leavitt made his second save of the night in the 68th minute, denying William & Mary's Diogo Branco.
  • The Tribe was awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute after Carlos Levy committed a foul in the box. Sam Delgado converted for William & Mary to level the score, 1-1.
  • Elon mounted a late surge to try to break the tie. Dominik Renz, Connor Mucchetti and Kozak all attempted shots in the final 15 minutes, but the Phoenix could not find the back of the net.
  • Leavitt stopped a final effort by the Tribe in the 89th minute. The match went on to end in a 1-1 tie.

Notes & Numbers
  • Kozak has now scored in consecutive games after notching his first goal with the Phoenix on Tuesday versus Davidson. His seven points (2g, 3a) are tied with Renz for the most on the team.
  • Wilson tallied his first point of the season with the assist on Kozak's marker. The junior made his third start of the campaign and second in a row.
  • Kozak and Renz paced the Phoenix with three shot attempts. All of Renz's shots came in the final 12 minutes of the contest. Mucchetti (2) and Wilson (2) also took multiple shots.
  • Leavitt made three saves in goal, two of which came in the second half.
  • William & Mary's penalty kick attempt and goal were the first against the Phoenix since Oct. 26, 2024, when Northeastern converted its lone attempt.
  • Levy, Mucchetti, Kozak, Majaliwa Msabaha and Weston Jonke all logged the full 90 minutes for the Phoenix.
  • Joe Taylor made his second start of the season for Elon, playing 35 minutes. He has started two of Elon's three CAA fixtures.
  • After a first half that saw just two total shot attempts, Elon outshot the Tribe in the second half, 10-6. Six of those shots came in the final 12 minutes of action.
  • By holding the Tribe to just eight shot attempts, Elon has now gone five straight games without allowing an opponent to reach double-digit shots. Only UNCW has attempted 10 or more shots versus the Phoenix this season.
  • The Phoenix earned nine corner kicks compared to just two for William & Mary.
  • The match featured 26 fouls with each team committing 13 apiece.
  • William & Mary's goal was just the second scored against Elon all season. The Phoenix had gone 357:51 without conceding prior to that Tribe tally.
  • The tie snaps Elon's five-match winning streak. It is the first draw for the Phoenix since a 0-0 result against Old Dominion on Aug. 25 in the season opener.
