Elon Takes First Loss Of Season At Stony Brook

Seawolves Convert Penalty Kick To Beat Phoenix 1-0

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Elon University women's soccer team (6-1-3, 0-1-1 CAA) dropped its first match of the season Sunday, falling 1-0 at defending CAA champion Stony Brook (7-2-1, 2-0-0 CAA).

Reilly Rich, who entered Sunday tied for second in the country in goals, converted a penalty kick for the Seawolves in the 60th minute for the game's lone tally. The Phoenix limited the conference's top scoring offense to just one goal and three shots on target.

The loss is Elon's first since last year's CAA Tournament semifinal, which also saw Stony Brook defeat the Phoenix. The Seawolves are the only opponent to defeat Elon in its last 13 matches.

How It Happened
  • Elon came close to finding the game's first goal in the 11th minute. Talia Feigin sent a cross into the box from the right wing that Jess Beck shot toward the goal. The ball bounced off the cross bar and was eventually controlled by Stony Brook goalkeeper Jona Hennings.
  • Stony Brook attempted the next six shots of the first half, with Katie Bisgrove turning away the lone attempt on target. Ashlee Brehio and Feigin got shots off for the Phoenix before the end of a scoreless half.
  • The Seawolves continued to apply pressure in the opening 10 minutes of the second half, taking four shots and forcing Bisgrove to make her second save of the contest.
  • In the 60th minute, Alexis Pierce committed a foul in the box to give the Seawolves a penalty kick opportunity. Rich took the kick for Stony Brook and rolled the ball into the bottom right corner of the net for the game's first goal.
  • Elon almost had the equalizer in the 82nd minute, but an apparent Brehio goal was deemed offside.
  • Brehio took Elon's final shot of the contest in the 85th minute, but the Phoenix could not find a tying goal.

Notes & Numbers
  • The Seawolves outshot Elon, 22-6, but only six of the game's 28 attempts were on target, with Stony Brook finishing with a 4-2 edge.
  • Brehio took three of Elon's six shots, two of which were shots on goal.
  • Bisgrove made a pair of saves in net for the Phoenix.
  • Miranda Dumornay made her second start of the season, playing a career-high 56 minutes in Elon's midfield.
  • Four Elon position players logged the full 90 minutes – Isa Murdock, Ava Hellner, Jessica Hill and Alexis Pierce.
  • Rich took a game-high eight shots for the Seawolves. The TopDrawerSoccer National Player of the Week now has 10 goals on the season.
  • Rich also scored on a penalty kick in last season's CAA semifinal. The last two penalty kick goals Elon has allowed have both been scored by Rich.
  • Elon falls to 0-3 against the Seawolves in matches played at LaValle Stadium.
