Elon Matches Longest Shutout Streak In Program History

Phoenix Records Sixth Straight Clean Sheet In 2-0 Win At George Mason

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Elon University women's soccer team (5-0-2) matched its longest streak of consecutive shutouts in program history Sunday with a 2-0 victory at George Mason (0-5-1).

The unbeaten Phoenix recorded its sixth straight clean sheet, equaling Elon's only other stretch of six consecutive shutouts, which came in the program's inaugural 1986 season. This is the first time Elon has notched six straight shutouts as a Division I program.

Reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Week Katie Bisgrove delivered her sixth straight victory in goal, making three stops. She has anchored all six Elon shutouts this season.

Ava Hellner scored Elon's first penalty kick goal of the season in the first half, with Ashlee Brehio adding her first tally of the season late in the opening period.

How It Happened
  • George Mason attempted the game's first five shots, including one on target in the 17th minute that required Bisgrove's first save of the contest.
  • Elon was awarded its first penalty kick opportunity of the season in the 22nd minute. Isabel DiPrima took the kick for the Phoenix, which George Mason goalkeeper Libby Davy stopped. However, it was ruled Davy moved off her line early, leading to a penalty retake for Elon. This time, Hellner took the kick and converted in the bottom left corner to put the Phoenix on the board.
  • The Phoenix struck again in the 37th minute on a stunning goal from Brehio. Megan Dwyer threw the ball in from the right sideline and quickly got the ball back. Dwyer then found Isa Murdock in the top right corner of the box, who passed the ball to Brehio, who was moving from right to left across the top of the box. Brehio gathered the ball and fired a shot with her left foot that curled to the right around a George Mason defender, past a leaping Davy and into the top right corner of the net for Elon's second goal of the day.
  • The Patriots attempted three more shots in the first half, the last of which Bisgrove controlled to maintain Elon's 2-0 lead going into the break.
  • Neither team registered a shot on goal in the second half. The Patriots attempted six shots but could not find a goal over the final 45 minutes as the Phoenix closed out the shutout victory.

Notes & Numbers
  • Hellner's goal was her second of the season and fourth of her Elon career. It was her first penalty kick goal with the Phoenix and the first successful penalty kick for Elon since Brehio made one on Oct. 15, 2023, at Stony Brook.
  • Brehio's tally was the first of her senior season, as she became Elon's ninth different goal scorer on the campaign. It was Brehio's 16th career goal, which is the most among active Elon players.
  • Murdock posted her third assist of the season with the primary helper on Brehio's goal. Murdock now leads the team with three assists and seven points on the season.
  • Dwyer picked up a secondary assist on Brehio's goal for her first point of the season. The sophomore had three points (1g, 1a) last season, all of which came versus Hampton.
  • It has been 553:28 of game time since Elon conceded its lone goal of the season on Aug. 14 at VCU. The Phoenix has not allowed a goal in over nine hours of game action.
  • With the shutout, Bisgrove is up to 11.5 in her career. She moves into No. 9 on Elon's all-time shutout list through just 24 appearances.
  • Bisgrove is the first Elon goalie to record shutouts in six consecutive matches.
  • Elon scored on two of its three first-half shots, with the unsuccessful penalty kick being the only attempt to not result in a goal.
  • The Patriots outshot the Phoenix, 16-4, but the teams finished with three shots on goal apiece.
  • Jessica Hill and Alexis Pierce logged the full 90 minutes on Elon's backline. Hill has played all 630 minutes for the Phoenix this season.
  • DiPrima made her first start with the Phoenix, with Jess Beck and Lilly McFadden making their first starts since Aug. 17 versus VMI.
  • Including Bisgrove, 19 Elon players saw action Sunday.
  • With the victory, Elon is now unbeaten in its last 13 games versus non-conference opponents to 13. The Phoenix has not lost to a non-conference opponent since 2023.
  • The Phoenix is still yet to trail through 630 minutes of game time this season.
  • Elon's shutout percentage of .857 is tied for the second best in the country, behind only Tennessee. The six shutouts as a team are also tied for the second most in the NCAA.
