ELON – Elon football head coach
Tony Trisciani announced the hiring of JB Lageman as the program's defensive line coach Wednesday. Lageman joins the Phoenix after spending the past four seasons as a defensive line coach and run-game coordinator at the Virginia Military Institute.
"JB has a strong reputation in the coaching community for recruiting and developing high level defensive line talent," Trisciani said. "His experience at the P4 and FCS level, along with his familiarity with our Defensive Coordinator
Casey Vance, and our defensive scheme make him the absolute right fit to lead our defensive front. We are excited to welcome his wife, Allison, and two children, Amelia and Hayes, to our Elon Football family."
Hairston served as the defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator within his role at VMI. He helped three different Keydets earn All-SoCon honors in his four seasons.
"I'm excited to be here at Elon," Lageman said. "Elon has had an upward trajectory with a lot of recent success in football, and there are a ton of resources to be competitive here. My family and I have always wanted to be in the North Carolina area and being able to reunite with a very good friend and former teammate (defensive coordinator
Casey Vance) was the final piece."
Lageman and Vance were teammates at West Virginia University where the two helped lead the Mountaineers to an Orange Bowl victory in 2011.
After his time with the Mountaineers, he spent one season with Concord University (2014) before joining the coaching staff at Louisville as a graduate assistant. In four years with the Cardinals (2015-18), he served as a graduate assistant during the first three seasons. In 2016, Louisville finished the season with a 7-1 record in the ACC and ranked 14
th nationally in total defense and 12
th in rushing defense.
He spent one season as the defensive line coach at the Florida Institute of Technology in 2019 before taking over the same position at McNeese State in 2020. During his two seasons with the Cowboys – spring of 2021 and fall of 2021 – McNeese State was in the top 15 in the FCS in total sacks and sacks per game.
A native of Huntington, West Virginia, Lageman has recruiting experience across the southeast. A 2013 graduate of the West Virginia University, he spent five seasons with Mountaineers and graduated with a degree in history. He later earned his masters in criminal justice from Louisville.
