ELON – The Elon men's soccer team (8-2-4) extended its unbeaten streak to 10 matches Tuesday night with a 2-2 tie against Longwood (6-6-1) at Rudd Field.
Elon took a one-goal lead into the half, but Longwood answered with a second-half equalizer. The teams alternated on the four goals with the Lancers coming from one down to tie the score on two separate occasions.
Dominik Renz and
Magnus Jacobsen netted Elon's goals with
Ben Madore assisting on both.
Elon also pushed its unbeaten streak at Rudd to 17 straight with the result as the contest kicked off a closing four-match homestand for the Phoenix.
How It Happened
- Elon struck quickly with Renz converting in the eighth minute on a shot to the bottom right corner of the goal off assists from Madore and Tønnes Daland. After Daland got the ball to Madore near midfield, Madore sprung Renz with a pass up the left sideline. With the Longwood goalkeeper coming forward, Renz beat him with a shot to his right for the game's first tally.
- Longwood answered with a goal in the 23rd minute to tie the score at 1-1.
- The Phoenix earned a throw in deep in Longwood territory in the 34th minute. After the initial throw was cleared by the Lancers, Weston Jonke lifted a cross from the right side of the field to Madore in the left side of the box. Madore headed the ball to the middle of the box to the head of Renz who found Jacobsen's head in front of him. Jacobsen then headed the ball past Longwood's keeper to restore Elon's advantage.
- Each team attempted one more shot before halftime, but the Phoenix maintained its 2-1 lead entering the break.
- The Lancers tied the game in the 52nd minute on a counterattack chance.
- Drew Hartman was forced to make a save in the 54th minute to keep the score tied.
- Elon attempted the next six shots after Hartman's save, with Daland getting the best look on a header chance in the 66th minute that forced Nicolas Pucci to come up with a stop in Longwood's goal. Jonke had a dangerous chance as well in the 67th minute, just missing the net wide.
- The Lancers attempted the final three shots of the contest with Hartman making a save in the 88th minute.
