Khalil Honored With Kay Yow Servant Leader Award

Award Recognizes Leadership, Selflessness, Service

ELON – Elon women's basketball junior Samira Khalil has been recognized as one of the 2026-27 collegiate women's basketball student-athlete recipients of the Kay Yow Servant Leader Award. The award recognizes student-athletes who exemplify the values of leadership, selflessness and service, embodying the legacy of Hall of Fame basketball coach Kay Yow.

"It is truly an honor to be recognized as a Kay Yow Servant Leader. Coach Yow embodied many admirable qualities and has left such an important and impactful legacy," Khalil said. "This is extra special to me considering she was Elon's first-ever women's basketball coach and had an impact on a community that means so much to me. I will continue to represent what she valued most by serving my team and the community that I have been blessed with to the best of my ability."

Khalil, a junior guard from Lexington, South Carolina, has made an impact for the Phoenix both on and off the court. A three-year member of the Elon program, Khalil has appeared in 36 career games and continues to be a valued member of the Phoenix. At Elon, Khalil has participated in Student Undergraduate Research and has been an active leader in Fellowship of Christian Athletes. In the community, Khalil has made a meaningful impact through her involvement with Feed the Hunger, Pen Pals, Autograph Sessions and as a counselor at Elon's basketball camps.

Khalil's honor carries a special connection to the history of Elon women's basketball. Yow began her collegiate coaching career at Elon in 1971 as the head coach of the school's first women's basketball team. In four seasons with the Phoenix, Yow compiled a 57-19 record and led Elon to two state championships. Her .750 winning percentage remains the best in program history, and her legacy continues to live on through Elon women's basketball and the student-athletes who embody the values she championed.

The Kay Yow Servant Leader Award recognizes high-character individuals who put the needs of others before their own, uplift those around them and lead with grace and humility. Recipients are nominated by their coaches and are selected for exemplifying the qualities that defined Yow's life and career, including her resolve, generosity, and servant's heart.

"Samira is such a beautiful light on our team. She serves as one who helps to build unity and community on our team and wherever she goes," said head coach Charlotte Smith. "She is a leader who is drawn to doing the right thing and guiding others to do the same. She is humble and has a very caring and nurturing spirit, which makes her an exceptional leader and embodies the character traits of Kay Yow."

As an honoree of the Kay Yow Servant Leader Award, Khalil will wear a special patch on her uniform throughout the 2026-27 season. The full list of Kay Yow Servant Leader Award winners will be announced later this season.
