Elon Pulls Away From Tribe For CAA Win

Phoenix Wins Fourth Straight, Picks Up Three Points

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Behind a pair of second-half goals scored just 1:29 apart, the Elon men's soccer team (7-2-2, 2-1-2 CAA) picked up a 3-1 win Saturday night against William & Mary (5-5-1, 2-2-1 CAA) at Martin Family Stadium.

After William & Mary tied the score at 1-1 in the second half, Joe Taylor and Martin Kozak both scored to build a two-goal lead for the Phoenix. Jordin Wilson netted Elon's first goal of the night in the first half.

Oscar Tonidandel assisted on each of Elon's first two goals for the first multi-assist effort of his Phoenix career. The midfielder has points in three straight CAA matches.

Elon extended its winning streak to four with the victory. The Phoenix also earned three points in the CAA South Division standings to move into second place, one point above the Tribe and College of Charleston.

How It Happened
  • Elon scored on the second shot of the match with Wilson converting off assists from Tonidandel and Daire McCarthy.
  • The Phoenix continued to apply pressure after Wilson's tally, attempting four of the next five shots.
  • The Tribe took the half's final shot in the final minute, but it missed the target as Elon took a 1-0 lead into the break.
  • William & Mary evened the score with an equalizer in the 56th minute.
  • Elon quickly responded in the 62nd minute, as Taylor scored his second goal in the last three matches off Tonidandel's second primary assist of the night. Weston Jonke was also credited with an assist on Taylor's goal.
  • Just 1:29 after Taylor's goal, the Phoenix was awarded a penalty kick, which Kozak deposited into the net to make it 3-1 for Elon.
  • Elon limited the Tribe to just four shot attempts over the remainder of the match. Drew Hartman stopped the lone one of those shots put on target in the 78th minute.
  • William & Mary's last shot in the final minute went wide left as the Phoenix closed out a two-goal victory.

Notable Numbers
  • Wilson's goal was his third in his last four appearances against the Tribe. The senior has now scored in each of Elon's last two trips to Martin Family Stadium. Both of Wilson's goals this season have come in Virginia, as his first tally of the campaign was Aug. 24 at Old Dominion.
  • After going without a goal in his first 22 Elon appearances, Taylor has now scored in two of the last three matches. Both of Taylor's goals have counted as game winners. The reigning CAA Defensive Player of the Week also logged 81 minutes on Elon's back line.
  • Kozak's goal was his first since Elon's season-opening victory against VMI on Aug. 20. The points were the senior's first since Elon's match at Old Dominion. Kozak improved to 4-for-5 on penalty kicks in his Phoenix tenure with his successful penalty attempt.
