Elon Powers Past Guilford

Phoenix Extends Winning Streak To Five

ELON – Six different Phoenix found the back of the net Tuesday night as the Elon men's soccer team (8-2-2) powered past Guilford College for an 8-0 victory at Rudd Field.

The Phoenix scored four goals in each half, outshooting the Quakers 35-1 on the night. Dominik Renz scored his first career hat trick and led Elon's scorers with seven points while Ben Madore tallied six points of his own behind a goal and a program-record tying four assists.

Robbie Reeves and JP Quigley both netted their first career goals in the second half. Reeves added two assists to finish the night with four points. In total, nine different Phoenix found the scoresheet with either a goal or assist.

The victory extends Elon's winning streak to five and also improved the team's unbeaten streak at Rudd to 16 consecutive matches.

How It Happened
  • Elon took the first 12 shots of the contest before finally scoring its first goal of the night in the 22nd minute when Madore sent a cross into the box that Renz put into the back of the net.
  • The Phoenix tacked on another goal in the 25th minute on its next shot attempt, with Renz converting off another feed from Madore.
  • Mikolaj Lenarcik was called upon in the 29th minute to stop an attempt from Guilford's Matias Barco.
  • Madore got in on the goal scoring in the 30th minute, intercepting a Guilford pass before firing the ball into the net for his fourth point in the game's opening half hour.
  • Elon tacked on a fourth goal in the final minute of the first half as Alex Wharton scored off Madore's third assist of the opening frame.
  • Jordin Wilson made it 5-0 for the Phoenix in the 59th minute, rolling a shot off the left goal post that deflected to the right and eventually over the goal line.
  • Reeves scored his first career goal in the 67th minute off a find from Wharton. Madore was credited with the secondary assist for his fourth helper of the contest.
  • In the 72nd minute, Reeves contributed to another Phoenix goal, this time dishing out an assist to Renz, who completed a hat trick with the tally.
  • Quigley got in on the scoring in the 77th minute off finds from Renz and Reeves.
  • Elon put three more shots on target in the final 10 minutes on the way to an eight-goal triumph.

Notable Numbers
  • Elon's eight goals were the most in a match for the Phoenix since an 8-1 victory over Rutgers on Sept. 2, 2018.
  • The eight-goal margin of victory was Elon's largest as a Division I program. It was Elon's largest winning margin since defeating Mars Hill 8-0 on Sept. 9, 1985.
  • Elon's six different goal scorers matched the most scorers the Phoenix has had in a game in its Division I history. Elon set that record last season when six different players netted a goal in a 6-4 victory over Campbell on Nov. 9 in the CAA Tournament semifinals.
  • The Phoenix finished the match with 12 assists to set a program record for assists in a match as a team. Elon's previous record was nine helpers against High Point on Oct. 13, 1995.
  • Elon also set a program record for points in a match with 28, besting the previous record mark of 23 from that 1995 High Point contest.
  • Madore's four assists tied the program record for most assists in a single match. Martin Kozak established that record in last season's CAA Tournament semifinal against Campbell.
  • Renz became the first Phoenix to net a hat trick since Scott Vatne scored three goals against Northeastern on Oct. 26, 2024. The forward now leads all CAA scorers this season in both points (17) and goals (7).
  • Renz added an assist for a seven-point night, the most points scored by a Phoenix in a match since Vatne also had seven in that 2024 victory against Northeastern.
  • This was the first time in Elon's Division I era that multiple players accrued six or more points in the same match.
  • Reeves tallied four points in the second half, the first points of his college career. The freshman logged a career-high 40 minutes and attempted five shots. He is the first Elon freshman to have four points in a match since Burl Shepherd netted a brace against UNCG on Sept. 25, 2019.
  • Wharton turned in the first three-point outing of his Phoenix career with a goal and assist. The goal was his second of the season and his assist was the first of his Phoenix career.
  • Wilson joined Wharton by delivering his first three-point performance with the Phoenix. The senior has scored goals in each of the last two matches, marking the second time in his career he has scored in consecutive games.
  • Wharton and Wilson each attempted a game-high seven shots on the night. Both put five of their seven shots on target.
  • Quigley's goal was the first of his career in his 10th appearance with the Phoenix. The midfielder played a career-high 60 minutes in the match.
  • Graham Jones secured his first Elon point with an assist on Wilson's second-half goal. The sophomore went the full 90 minutes on Elon's back line.
  • Oscar Tonidandel and Daire McCarthy rounded out Elon's point scorers with both tallying an assist. McCarthy now has an assist in three straight matches while Tonidandel has assisted on three goals in the last two games.
  • Joining Jones in playing the full 90 minutes was Diego Thompson. It was the midfielder's first time playing an entire match.
  • The 35 shot attempts were Elon's most in a match since also taking 35 shots against Greensboro College in a 5-0 victory on Oct. 25, 2023. Of the 35 shots against the Quakers, 23 were on target.
  • Lenarick stopped Guilford's lone shot attempt of the night as the Phoenix goalkeeper registered his second clean sheet of the campaign.
  • The Phoenix held the Quakers without a corner kick attempt on the night. It was Elon's first time not conceding a corner opportunity since that 2023 win over Greensboro College.
  • Elon is now unbeaten in its last 16 matches at Rudd, a streak that began with last season's home opener.
