Phoenix Falls Late At North Carolina A&T, 13-10

Elon Takes Third-Quarter Lead Before Aggies Rally

GREENSBORO – Despite forcing three turnovers and getting 102 rushing yards and a touchdown from freshman Kamerin McDowell-Moore, Elon football dropped a 13-10 decision to North Carolina A&T on Saturday afternoon at Truist Stadium.

Playing in North Carolina A&T's 100th edition of the Greatest Homecoming on Earth, the Phoenix erased a 3-0 halftime deficit and took a 10-3 lead in the third quarter. The Aggies responded with 10 unanswered points, including a go-ahead 34-yard field goal with 2:18 remaining, to secure the victory.

Elon fell to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in CAA play with its fourth consecutive loss. North Carolina A&T improved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in the CAA.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The defenses controlled the opening half as neither team scored until the final minute of the second quarter. Elon came away with the game's first takeaway when Xavier Porter intercepted North Carolina A&T quarterback Kevin White during the Aggies' opening possession.
  • North Carolina A&T broke the scoreless tie just before halftime. Asher Holland made a 25-yard field goal with 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter to send the Aggies into the locker room with a 3-0 advantage.
  • Elon immediately seized momentum to begin the second half. Tyler Owens recovered a muffed North Carolina A&T kickoff return at the Aggies' 39-yard line, and the Phoenix drove 31 yards before Luke Barnes connected on a 25-yard field goal with 10:07 remaining in the third quarter to tie the game at 3-3.
  • The Phoenix defense struck again on North Carolina A&T's first play from scrimmage following the field goal. White fumbled at the Aggies' 27-yard line and Trey Woods recovered, giving Elon another short field.
  • Brady Stober connected with Zimere Winston for 23 yards on the first play of the ensuing possession to move the Phoenix to the A&T 4-yard line. McDowell-Moore carried on each of the next four plays, scoring from two yards out on fourth-and-goal to give Elon a 10-3 lead with 7:19 remaining in the third quarter.
  • North Carolina A&T answered with an 11-play, 78-yard scoring drive. White capped the possession with an 8-yard touchdown pass to Jayvonne Dillard with 31 seconds left in the third quarter, tying the score at 10-10.
  • The score remained tied until late in the fourth quarter. The Aggies drove 38 yards on eight plays before Holland's 34-yard field goal put North Carolina A&T back in front, 13-10, with 2:18 to play.
  • Elon mounted a final drive, advancing 61 yards in seven plays. Stober completed a 13-yard pass to Winston and a 36-yard strike to Alex Voss before a North Carolina A&T pass interference penalty moved the Phoenix into the red zone.
  • The Phoenix reached the Aggies' 14-yard line, but Stober was sacked and lost a fumble on third-and-6 with 44 seconds remaining, allowing North Carolina A&T to run out the clock.
