Elon Downs Liberty In Home Opener

Phoenix Wins Four Consecutive Singles Matches To Notch 5-2 Victory

ELON – The Elon women's tennis team (2-1) captured its home opener Friday afternoon with a 5-2 victory over Liberty (5-2) at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

After securing the doubles point with a pair of wins, the Phoenix carried that momentum into singles play, claiming four consecutive matches to seal the team victory.

The Rundown
  • Elon secured the doubles point with consecutive victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles.
  • On Court 3, Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec erased an early 0-3 deficit, reeling off six straight games to claim a 6-3 win and put the Phoenix on the board.
  • The point was clinched at the No. 2 spot, where seniors Madison Cordisco and Helen Sarikulaya delivered a 6-4 decision, marking their fifth doubles win together in dual-match play.
  • The match on Court 1 went unfinished, as Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding were locked in a tightly contested battle that featured multiple breaks before being halted at 5-5.
  • Alexis Nyborg was first off the court in singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Candy Wai at the No. 5 spot. The junior has dropped just three games in her two singles victories this spring.
  • At No. 2 singles, Kack rebounded from an early 0-2 deficit in the opening set, winning six of the next seven games to take it, 6-3. She carried that momentum into the second, completing the straight-sets victory over Yoanna Radulova with a 6-0 shutout. In her last two singles wins, Kack has won three 6-0 sets.
  • Reding clinched the match at No. 3 singles, battling past Maria Turchetto 6-1, 7-6 (2).
  • Kranec added Elon's fifth point with a 7-6 (0), 6-3 decision over Milana Tsulygina at No. 4 singles, marking her fifth career victory in the No. 4 position.
  • Reding and Kranec each captured their third career singles tiebreak set, marking their first tiebreak victories of the season.
  • The Phoenix dropped the final two singles matches despite tightly contested opening sets. Cordisco rallied from a 1-5 deficit in the first set to narrow the margin before ultimately falling 7-5, 6-4, while Bergeron was edged 7-6 (4), 6-2.
  • Elon improves to 6-3 all-time against Liberty with the win.
