Phoenix Wins Fourth Straight To Start Season

Long Balls Spark Elon’s 6-4 Win Over Presbyterian

ELON – The Elon baseball team used a four-run sixth inning to spark a 6-4 victory over Presbyterian on Tuesday night at Latham Park. The Phoenix improved to 4-0 on the season, their first 4-0 start since 2015.

Presbyterian (2-3) struck first in the top of the first when Amman Dewberry launched a solo home run to right field off of Phoenix starter Owen Winebarger, who was otherwise strong across 4.0 innings, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out four in his first career start on the mound.

After mustering only two hits through the first four frames, Elon's offense responded in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run homer by Vince Fattore, bringing home Jared Hall and Nate Sterling and putting the Phoenix ahead. Brian DuRoff followed with a solo home run two at-bats later in the inning to stretch the lead.

The Phoenix added insurance in the sixth as Jake Hajdu doubled home Jackson Alford, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Hall.

Presbyterian mounted a late rally in the seventh, scoring three runs – including a two-run double by Holden Baker – but could not complete the comeback. The Blue Hose had the tying run at the plate in the top of the eighth when Elon went to RJ Latkowski, who eventually stranded two runners with his first of two strikeouts on his way to an eventual second save of the season.

Mike Staiano (1-0) earned the win, tossing two scoreless relief innings in the fifth and sixth frames as the Phoenix jumped ahead.

Fattore – named CAA Player of the Week on Monday after a hot start in Elon's season-opening sweep of Delaware – finished with a team-high three RBIs, while Jackson Alford went 3-for-3 with a double and stole two bases, and Jake Hajdu added an RBI double and scored twice. Jared Hall also drove in a run for Elon.
