TALLAHASSEE – A walk-off single from junior
Teagan Baulsir lifted the Elon softball team to a 4-3 victory over Dartmouth on Saturday morning in the Phoenix's second day at the Dugout Classic at JoAnne Graf Field.
Elon (3-9) picked up its second win of the weekend, both coming against the Big Green, who fell to 0-3.
At the Plate
- Elon recorded 10 hits in the game, marking its second straight contest with double-digit hits. Payton Swart went 3-for-3 at the plate, setting a career high in hits in a game. Two of those hits were doubles, while the senior also drew a walk and scored the game-winning run.
- Peyton Fitzpatrick and Mary Moss Wirt each added multi-hit performances, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Fitzpatrick drove in two runs in the contest, while Baulsir added the game-winning RBI.
In the Circle
- Lia Miller earned the complete-game victory, improving to 1-0 on the season. The junior allowed five hits and three runs, but only two were earned, while striking out three.
The Rundown
Dartmouth struck first in the top of the opening frame. The Big Green had its leadoff batter reach on a Phoenix error and later move to third on a two-out single. The runner then stole home to give Dartmouth the early 1-0 lead.
Elon nearly answered in the bottom of the first.
Allie Dawson reached on a fielder's choice and attempted to score on a Swart double to left center. Dawson was thrown out at home, while Swart was also tagged out on the play, ending the Phoenix threat.
The Phoenix got on the board in the bottom of the second.
Chloe Hatzopoulos drew a leadoff walk and advanced to third on a one-out single from Wirt. Hatzopoulos later scored as Wirt drew the defense's attention while attempting to steal second before being caught stealing. Elon continued to apply pressure by loading the bases with two outs, but a groundout left them stranded.
Dartmouth regained the lead in the top of the third, scoring on an RBI fielder's choice and a sacrifice fly to push its advantage to 3-1.
Elon's offense was quiet until the bottom of the sixth.
Lani Wyrick drew a one-out walk and moved to third on a Wirt double to left, putting runners in scoring position. Fitzpatrick delivered a clutch single up the middle to tie the game at 3-3, driving in both Wyrick and Wirt.
After Miller retired Dartmouth in order in the top of the seventh, the Phoenix came to the plate looking for the walk-off. Swart battled out of an 0-2 count and doubled with one out to put the winning run in scoring position. A wild pitch moved her to third before Baulsir stepped in the batter's box.
Baulsir worked a full count before lining a single into shallow right field on the sixth pitch of the at-bat. Swart scored easily from third, sealing the 4-3 walk-off victory for the Phoenix.
