Phoenix Sweeps North Carolina A&T

Elon Begins Homestand With 7-0 Win

ELON – The Elon women's tennis team (4-2) started its five-match homestand with a 7-0 sweep of North Carolina A&T (1-1) on Wednesday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Elon won all nine matches across doubles and singles, with five Phoenix winning multiple matches. Freshman Nathalie Marinovitch made her dual debut in singles, winning at the No. 6 spot.

The Rundown
  • The Phoenix took the doubles point with wins on all three courts.
  • Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec were the first to finish on Court 3, defeating Dorsa Cheraghi and Hana El Sherif, 6-3. It was their team-best fourth doubles victory of the season.
  • Elon clinched the doubles point on Court 1, with Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding posting a 6-4 win over Flavia Villegas and Juana Gomez Weiss. The Phoenix duo led 5-2 but the Aggies rallied to make the score 5-4. Bergeron and Reding closed out the match in the ensuing game for their third win of the spring and 21st as a duo.
  • In the final doubles match to finish, first-time duo Madison Cordisco and Alexis Nyborg delivered a tiebreak win against Randy Rakotoarilala and Tabeth Tadoum. Cordisco and Nyborg trailed by a break late, but fought back to take the match into a tiebreak. The Elon duo won the first four points of the breaker on the way to a 7-1 triumph. It was Nyborg's first dual doubles victory with the Phoenix, as Nyborg became the seventh doubles partner Cordisco has won a dual match with in her Elon career.
  • Bergeron stretched Elon's lead to 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over El Sherif at the top singles spot. It was the junior's first singles win since Feb. 6 against NC Wesleyan.
  • Shortly after Bergeron's victory, Kranec matched her teammate with a 6-2, 6-2 score of her own against Charaghi. It was Kranec's fourth win of the spring, all of which have come in straight sets at the No. 4 position.
  • On Court 3, Reding found a way through a first-set tiebreak on the way to a 7-6 (1), 6-2 win against Gomez Weiss. It was Reding's fourth victory of the spring, with the junior improving to 2-0 in tiebreaks this season.
  • Kack split the first two sets at the No. 2 spot against Rakotoarilala, coming from a set behind to force a match tiebreak. Kack did not drop a point in the match tiebreak, winning it 10-0 for her fourth win of the spring. The win was Elon's first this season after dropping the first set.
  • Marinovitch played the No. 6 singles spot in her Elon dual debut and fought past Villegas, 6-4, 6-4. The freshman broke Villegas early in the first set and won four of the final five games in the second set for her first career victory.
  • In the final match to finish, Nyborg overcame losing the second set to defeat Tadoum in a match tiebreak, 11-9. It was Nyborg's first match tiebreak victory with the Phoenix and her fourth victory overall this spring, tying her with Kack, Reding and Kranec for the most on the team.
  • Elon improved to 4-0 on the season when winning the doubles point.
  • The Phoenix is now 2-0 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center with its next four matches coming on its home courts.
  • The win was Elon's second this season to come by a 7-0 score, as the Phoenix also swept NC Wesleyan on Feb. 6.
