Elon Pulls Away From Terriers

Phoenix Posts Straight Sweep

ELON – The Elon women's tennis team (5-2) fended off early challenges in singles from Wofford (3-3) on Saturday, coming through several close matches to post a 4-0 sweep against the Terriers at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Five of the six first sets in singles went 10-plus games, with the Phoenix prevailing in all five, which included a pair of tiebreak wins. Elon pulled away in the second set on several courts to secure a comfortable victory.

The Phoenix also continued its success in doubles, improving to 7-0 in doubles matches in its three outings at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center this spring.

The Rundown
  • Elon quickly grabbed the doubles point with a pair of convincing performances.
  • On Court 1, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding rolled past Wofford's Ella Suk and Grace Agster, 6-0. Elon's top pairing is up to 22 dual wins together, six of which have come by a 6-0 score. Suk made her return to Elon after winning the CAA title with the Phoenix last spring.
  • Cornelia Kack and Lisa Kranec clinched the doubles point for the Phoenix with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 spot against Chloe Elliott and Grace Stout. The duo leads the Phoenix with five victories this spring.
  • Madison Cordisco and Alexis Nyborg had just broken back to level their match on Court 2, 4-4, when play was halted.
  • Reding extended Elon's lead to 2-0 with a gritty win on Court 3. The junior served for the opening set leading 5-4 but was broken by Wofford's Katie Godfree. However, Reding broke back in the ensuing game and successfully served out the set in her second attempt. She then cruised through the second set for a 7-5, 6-2 win. With the victory, Reding now leads the Phoenix on the season with five wins, all of which have come at the No. 3 spot.
  • Just like her doubles partner Reding, Bergeron also overcame a late wobble in her opening set. Bergeron was broken while serving at 5-5 against Agster on Court 1, but she broke serve in the next game to take the first set into a tiebreak. Bergeron raced out to a 5-1 lead in the breaker and held on to win it, 7-4, to take the opening frame. The junior also matched Reding with a 6-2 second-set score as she moved the Phoenix ahead, 3-0. The win was Bergeron's second straight.
  • With her first-set triumph, Bergeron improved her stellar career tiebreak record in dual singles matches to 7-2, a winning percentage of 88%.
  • Elon's Nos. 4-6 singles players were racing to the finish line to clinch the match for the Phoenix. Freshman Nathalie Marinovitch won the battle, finishing off a 6-4, 7-5 win against Marie Henriksen at the No. 6 spot. Marinovitch has won the first four singles sets of her dual career after also winning in straight sets in her debut against North Carolina A&T on Wednesday.
  • Cordisco and Nyborg were both a game away from winning when Marinovitch clinched the victory. Cordisco dropped her first set on Court 5 against Elliott, but stormed back to win the second and led a 5-1 lead in the third. At the No. 4 spot, Nyborg had just broken Suk in the second set to take a 7-6 (2), 5-3 advantage.
  • Kack was also within two games of the finish line in her singles match. The junior led 4-2 in a third set against Quinn Bernthal on Court 2 when her match was halted.
  • The victory was Elon's second straight sweep after beating North Carolina A&T earlier this week.
  • The Phoenix is now 3-0 this season at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
