ELON –
Aidan Stieglitz,
Mike Staiano and
RJ Latkowski combined to throw Elon's first no-hitter since 2017 as the Phoenix defeated Fairfield, 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Latham Park.
The trio faced the minimum 27 batters in the victory. Stieglitz, making his first collegiate start, threw 7.2 innings of no-hit baseball and carried a perfect game into the eighth inning. Staiano recorded the final out of the eighth before Latkowski worked a clean ninth to secure the no-hitter and the series win.
Charlie Evans, also making his first collegiate start at designated hitter, recorded the lone multi-hit game for Elon and drove in a run.
Jose Mariano broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single.
Elon improved to 6-4 overall, while Fairfield fell to 0-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stieglitz was efficient early, needing just 34 pitches to complete the first three innings.
- Fairfield starter Hunter Hoxie matched him early, allowing a base runner in each of the first three innings but not permitting anyone past second base.
- After 4.5 scoreless innings, Elon broke through in the bottom of the fifth. The Phoenix drew three walks over a five-batter stretch to load the bases with two outs. Following a pitching change, Mariano lined a single into right field to score the game's first two runs. Evans followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 3-0.
- Stieglitz continued to dominate, striking out two in the sixth — including his first full-count battle of the game — and retiring the side in order in the seventh.
- The right-hander lost his perfect game bid with a two-out walk in the eighth. Staiano entered in relief, and catcher Nate Sterling threw out the runner attempting to steal second on a wild pitch to preserve the no-hitter.
- Latkowski handled the ninth inning, retiring the side in order to complete the combined no-hitter.
QUICK HITS
- Six wins through 10 games mark Elon's best start through 10 contests since 2020.
- The no-hitter is Elon's first since the 2017 CAA Tournament, when George Kirby and Jordan Barrett combined on the effort despite ultimately falling in a 1-0 loss to College of Charleston.
- It is also the first no-hitter at Latham Park since 2017, when Robbie Welhaf no-hit Longwood in an 8-0 win in the third game of the season on Feb. 18.
- The shutout is Elon's first since blanking Hofstra, 5-0, on May 2 last season.
- Stieglitz's 7.2 innings are the most by an Elon starter since Nolan Straniero threw a complete game against North Carolina A&T on April 26, 2025.
- His 7.2 innings are also the most by a Phoenix freshman since Kyle Brnovich tossed eight innings against UNCW on May 14, 2017. His seven strikeouts are the most by a Phoenix freshman since Justin Mitrovich against William & Mary in 2023.
- RJ Latkowski earned his CAA-leading third save of the season.
- Jose Mariano recorded his second multi-RBI game of 2026.
- Charlie Evans notched his first career multi-hit game and added his third RBI of the season.
