ELON – The trio of
Aidan Stieglitz,
Mike Staiano and
RJ Latkowski combined to throw the first Elon no-hitter since 2017. The three pitchers worked the minimum, 27 batters, Saturday afternoon in the 3-0 Phoenix win.
In his first career start,
Aidan Stieglitz was masterful. He threw 7.2 of no-hit baseball and carried a perfect game late into the 8
th inning.
Mike Staiano got the final out of the eighth inning before
RJ Latkowski finished off the no-hitter with a clean 9
th inning.
Charlie Evans also made his first collegiate start at designated hitter. Evans was the lone player with a multi-hit game on Saturday and drove in a run.
Jose Mariano broke the scoreless tie in the 5
th inning with a two-RBI single.
Elon improves to 6-4 on the season while Fairfield falls to 0-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Stieglitz was dominant from the start and finished his first three innings in only 34 pitches.
- Fairfield's Hunter Hoxie was equal to Stieglitz. Hoxie allowed a base runner in each of the first three innings but did not allow a baserunner passed second base.
- After four and a half innings, the Phoenix offense got going in the bottom of the 5th.
- In the 5th, Elon's plate discipline took the stage. Over five hitters, Elon drew three walks to load the bases with two outs. After a pitching change, Mariano dumped a single into right field to bring in the game's first runs. Evans brought home the game's third run just a batter later to give Elon a 3-0 lead after five frames.
- Stieglitz continued to roll into the back half of the contest. In the 6th inning, Stieglitz faced his first full count, which ended in another strikeout. He struck out a pair of batters in the 6th before he sat down the Stags in order in the 7th.

- The right-hander lost his perfect game bid on a walk with two outs in the 8th. Staiano came in for relief, but Nate Sterling threw out the runner trying for second on a wild pitch.
- In the 9th, Latkowski came on for the save and slammed the door on the Stags with a 1-2-3 inning to secure the no-hitter and the series win.

- It is the first Elon pitching shutout since the Phoenix blanked Hofstra (05/02) last season, 5-0.
