Phoenix Falls On Opening Day

Elon Held To Two Hits In Loss To Hawks

CHAPEL HILL – The Elon University softball team fell to Saint Joseph's, 3-1, on Thursday in its opening game of the season at the UNC Tournament at Anderson Softball Stadium.
 
At the Plate
  • The Phoenix was held to two hits offensively in the game, with Greta Hessenthaler and Teagan Baulsir recording Elon's lone base hits. Elon also left four runners on base.
 
In the Circle
  • Chana Wolfe took the loss in the circle for Elon. The Salina, Kan., native pitched 2.0 innings and allowed three runs on three hits.
  • Starter Anna Dew tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing two hits while striking out two and walking two.
  • Lia Miller pitched a scoreless seventh for the Phoenix, adding a strikeout to her line.
 
The Rundown
  • Saint Joseph's threatened early in the top of the third inning. After the first two batters were retired, the Hawks placed two runners on base with a single and a walk, but Elon recorded the final out on a flyout.
  • Both teams traded runs in the fifth inning. Saint Joseph's took the lead in the top half of the frame, but the Phoenix answered in the bottom half. Lani Wyrick drew a two-out walk and stole second to move into scoring position. A throwing error advanced her to third before she stole home to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Hawks regained the lead with a two-run sixth inning on an RBI single followed by an RBI groundout. Elon managed just one hit the rest of the way in the 3-1 loss.
 
On Deck
  • The Phoenix returns to the field tomorrow to face host North Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
