Elon Sweeps NC Wesleyan

Phoenix Picks Up First Win Of Season

GREENSBORO – The Elon women's tennis team (1-1) picked up its first victory of the season Friday night, sweeping NC Wesleyan, 7-0, at Starmount Country Club.

The Phoenix won all three doubles matches to earn the opening point before winning all six singles contests. It was Elon's first match since opening the season on Jan. 16.

Cornelia Kack and Alexis Nyborg both earned their first dual singles victories with the Phoenix, with Kack adding her first dual doubles win.

The Rundown
  • Elon dropped just one game in its three doubles matches on the way to winning the doubles point.
  • On Court 1, Simone Bergeron and Mariana Reding won 6-1 for their 19th dual victory together. It was their eighth win at the No. 1 position.
  • Seniors Madison Cordisco and Helen Sarikulaya teamed up for a 6-0 win at the No. 2 position. It was their fourth dual win as a duo and the first to come at the second doubles spot.
  • Kack and Lisa Kranec rounded out a perfect doubles point with a 6-0 triumph of their own on Court 3. It was Kack's first dual doubles win with the Phoenix.
  • Kack kept her momentum going in singles, sweeping NC Wesleyan's Bethan Fothergill, 6-0, 6-0, on Court 2 for her first dual singles win with Elon.  
  • Reding made it 3-0 for Elon with a 6-1, 6-0 win against Ivanna Torres at the No. 3 spot. It was her 32nd dual singles victory, 16 of which have come at the No. 3 position.
  • Kranec earned her first singles win of the spring on Court 4, defeating Renata Torres, 6-1, 6-0. It was her fourth career win at No. 4 singles.
  • On Court 5, Nyborg picked up a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles against Ajia Selimovic. It was her first dual singles victory with the Phoenix.
  • Cordisco wrapped up Elon's overall sweep, dropping just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 decision against Peyton McGahey at the No. 6 spot. It was the senior's 20th career dual victory and the 11th to come at No. 6 singles.  
  • Elon improved to 3-0 all-time against NC Wesleyan with the victory.
 
Up Next
Elon will make its home debut Feb. 13 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center against Liberty. The contest is slated for a 2 p.m. start.
