Phoenix Drops Tournament Finale At UNCG

Murray Has Second Multi-Hit Game Of The Weekend

GREENSBORO – The Elon softball team put the go-ahead runs on base in the final inning but ultimately fell to UNCG, 2-0, in its final game of the Elon-UNCG Tournament on Sunday at UNCG Softball Stadium.

Elon fell to 4-14 on the season, while UNCG improved to 13-8 on the year.

At the Plate
  • Elon was held to a pair of hits in the contest, both coming off the bat of redshirt junior Mauri Murray. The Marvin, North Carolina, native went 2-for-3 at the plate for her second multi-hit game of the weekend.

In the Circle
  • Anna Dew took the loss to fall to 3-3 despite another strong outing in the circle. The junior allowed two runs on two hits in her complete-game effort while striking out four batters.
The Rundown
Elon had two runners reach in the top of the first. Teagan Baulsir drew a two-out walk before Murray followed with a single. However, the pair were stranded on a groundout to end the inning.

The Phoenix found itself in a similar spot in the top of the third. Baulsir again walked with two outs before advancing to second on Murray's second hit of the game. Both runners were left on base as UNCG recorded the final out of the inning.

UNCG broke the scoreless stalemate in the bottom of the third. The Spartans reached on a leadoff walk and advanced the runner to third on a sacrifice bunt. A two-out double to right center drove in the run to give UNCG a 1-0 lead.

Dew and the Phoenix remained steady defensively until the bottom of the sixth. UNCG led off the inning with a single and moved the runner to second on a wild pitch. A sacrifice bunt advanced the runner to third before a sacrifice fly to center doubled the Spartans' lead to 2-0.

Elon made one final push in the top of the seventh. The Phoenix had a runner on base with two outs before loading the bases on hit-by-pitches drawn by Greta Hessenthaler and Julia Tamulski. Elon worked a full count with its final batter, but a called strike ended the threat and the contest.

On Deck
Elon travels to NC State on Tuesday for an early-week matchup against the Wolfpack. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. and the game will stream on ACC Network Extra.
