ELON – The Elon men's tennis team (3-7) dropped a narrow 4-3 decision to Coastal Carolina (9-5) on Friday afternoon at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.
After claiming the doubles point with wins on Courts 1 and 3, the Phoenix added singles victories on Courts 2 and 4 but was unable to secure the clinching point, as the Chanticleers rallied with four straight wins.
The Rundown
- The Phoenix secured the doubles point with victories on Courts 1 and 3.
- On Court 3, Oskar Antinheimo and Rafael Ymer rolled past Enzo Garutti and Eric Tripathi, 6-1. The win marked their second together this season after also teaming up for a victory against Florida Gulf Coast on Feb. 27.
- Elon clinched the point at the No. 1 position, where Veljko Krstic and Nikola Parichkov defeated Christopher Norlin and Iannis Fernandes, 6-4. The duo rallied from a 4-2 deficit, winning four straight games to close it out. At 4-4, they erased a 0-40 hole to hold for a 5-4 lead before breaking serve to seal the match.
- Antinheimo extended the Phoenix lead with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Garutti at No. 4 singles. It marked his first credited victory since the opening match of the spring after multiple unfinished matches in which he had won the first set.
- Ymer then pushed Elon's lead to 3-0 with a win on Court 2. The sophomore defeated Juan Cruz Collardin, 6-2, 0-6, 6-0, for his team-leading seventh dual singles victory of the season.
- On Court 1, Krstic dropped a first-set tiebreak and was unable to recover in the second. Parichkov won his opening set 6-4 but fell in the next two sets, bringing Coastal Carolina within one at 3-2.
- Alonso Roca also started strong for the Phoenix at No. 3 singles, battling through a tightly contested first set and prevailing in a tiebreak, 7-6 (3). He dropped the final two sets, however, as the Chanticleers tied the match at 3-3.Â
- At No. 5 singles, Charles Pilet fell 7-5 in a hard-fought opening set but responded in the second. Trailing 4-3, he broke serve to level the set and forced a tiebreak, which he won 7-6 (3). Pilet ultimately dropped the third set as Coastal Carolina clinched the match.
