GREENVILLE, S.C. – The No. 74 Elon women's tennis team (8-3) bounced back Saturday with an impressive 4-1 road victory against Furman (8-4) at the Mickel Tennis Center.
The Phoenix won the doubles point via a decisive win from
Nathalie Marinovitch and
Cornelia Kack and carried the momentum into singles, with Nyborg and
Mariana Reding setting up Kack to deliver the clinching triumph.
Elon rebounded after a close 4-3 home loss to South Alabama earlier this week, which snapped a four-match winning streak. The Phoenix is now 3-0 this season after losses. Â
The Rundown
- Elon won its sixth straight doubles point with wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots.
- On Court 3, Kack and Lisa Kranec picked up their team-best eighth win of the spring, defeating Lily Doherty and Molly Robinson, 6-3. The Elon tandem broke in the first Furman service game and never surrendered the advantage.
- Kack and Kranec have won five straight decisions together, losing no more than three games in any of those victories.
- Furman won at No. 1 doubles, with their No. 34 ranked pairing of Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren besting Simone Bergeron and Reding, 6-4.
- After going down an early break on Court 2, Nyborg and Marinovitch, who were playing together for just the second time this spring, got their match against Bianca Ceroni and Macy Hitchcock back on serve and broke again at 5-5 to move within one game of victory. Nyborg sealed an Elon victory and the doubles point with a forehand passing shot up the line.
- The win was Marinovitch's first dual doubles triumph in her third attempt.
- The Phoenix improved to 20-8 in doubles this spring, with a 13-2 mark in the last six contests.
- Reding moved the Phoenix ahead 2-0 with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles against Ceroni. It was Reding's team-best eighth win of the season and her sixth straight, with all six coming in straight sets.
- On Court 5, Nyborg also rolled to a convincing decision, topping Doherty, 6-3, 6-1, for her sixth victory of the spring, the third most on the Phoenix. Five of the junior's six wins have come at the No. 5 position.
- Furman delivered its first point of the day with a win at No. 4 singles.
- Making her debut at No. 1 singles for the Phoenix, Kack clinched the match with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 win against Warren. Kack broke in the eighth game of the third set to take a 5-3 lead and then served out the match in her ensuing service game. It was the sophomore's fifth consecutive win and her seventh this spring, just one shy of Reding for the most on the Phoenix.
- On Court 2, Bergeron was fighting back in a third set when her match was halted. She trailed 5-2 but won three straight games to level the score at 5-5 when play stopped.
- Marinovitch was also working her way back into a match on Court 6 when play was called. The freshman recovered from dropping the first set to win the second and led 2-1 when Kack's win ended the match.
- The win was Elon's first on the road this season and snapped Furman's five-match winning streak. The Paladins, who have been ranked as high as No. 67 this spring, have wins this season Wake Forest and Virginia Tech.
- The Phoenix has now won five of its last six matches.
- The victory was Elon's first over Furman since the semifinals of the 2014 Southern Conference Tournament. It was the second win all-time for the Phoenix in Greenville, with the other coming in 2013.
- Elon has bounced back after all three of its defeats this season, dropping just one point across wins over NC Wesleyan, North Carolina A&T and Furman.
