Elon, ECU Meet For Midweek Action

Phoenix Embarks On Four-Game Road Swing At ECU

ELON – The Elon softball team begins a four-game road swing this week as the Phoenix (9-17) travels to East Carolina (19-10) for a midweek contest on Tuesday. Opening pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Max R. Joyner Family Stadium in Greenville, N.C.
 
FOLLOW THE PHOENIX SERIES HISTORY
  • East Carolina leads the all-time series over the Phoenix, 19-8-1, dating back to 1998.
  • The Pirates have won four of the past five games in the series, including three straight in Greenville.
  • Elon won the most recent game in the series over the Pirates, an 8-7 walk-off victory last season in extra innings at Hunt Softball Park.
  • The Phoenix's last win at ECU came in 2017 with a 10-9 result.
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Phoenix hosted Tarleton State and Lehigh for three games last weekend at Hunt Softball Park. Elon went 2-1 versus the Texans and Mountain Hawks and enters Tuesday as winners of five of its past seven games.
  • Elon fell in its opening game, 7-3, to Tarleton State last Friday but rebounded with a 9-2 win in the rematch on Sunday. The Phoenix also defeated Lehigh, 7-6, on Saturday despite a late-inning rally by the Mountain Hawks.
  • Elon batted .329 in the three games with six players hitting .300 or better. Mary Moss Wirt posted a .750 average to lead the Maroon and Gold, while Mauri Murray had a team-best five hits with a .556 average along with a home run and six RBI.
  • The Phoenix pitching staff had a 3.33 ERA in 21.0 innings with nine strikeouts and three walks. Anna Dew led Elon with a 2.55 ERA in 11 innings and a 1-1 record. Chana Wolfe earned the win versus Lehigh, while Lia Miller recorded a save. 
AROUND THE HORN
  • After being idle last weekend during CAA play, Elon is tied for first in the South Division of the CAA standings with UNCW with a 3-0 record. Both teams will meet this weekend in Wilmington.
  • Elon is slashing .244/.334/.340 on the season with 103 runs scored, 36 extra-base hits and 84 RBI.
  • Chloe Hatzopoulos is hitting a team-high .333 among the Phoenix regulars. The redshirt senior has team highs in hits (25), total bases (34) and RBI (13).
  • Greta Hessenthaler is second on the team with a .260 average and 19 hits. Teagan Baulsis is third with a .257 batting average and is one of three players on the team with double-digit RBI with 10, tied for second on the squad with Murray.
  • Wyrick leads the Phoenix in stolen bases, going 10-for-10 on the year. The sophomore ranks third in the CAA in total defensive assists (57) and second in assists per game (2.28).
  • Dew leads Elon in innings pitched (64.0), ERA (3.17), complete games (five) and strikeouts (64). Her strikeout total ranks second in the CAA, while the Harrisburg, N.C., native is third in the league in strikeouts per seven innings (7.5).
  • Elon is in its 49th season of competitive softball, the program's 37th fastpitch season and 27th at the Division I level.
  • Head coach Kathy Bocock is in her 15th season leading the Phoenix. The winningest coach in program history, Bocock has 363 wins at Elon and 598 career victories across 29 seasons as a head coach.
SCOUTING EAST CAROLINA
  • The Pirates are 19-10 on the season and have won two in a row after taking the past two contests versus Florida Atlantic last weekend in their American Athletic Conference series. ECU is currently 13-6 at home entering Tuesday.
  • ECU is coming off a 31-26 record in 2025 with a 14-13 mark in the American. The Pirates were tabbed to finish sixth out of 10 teams in the 2026 American preseason poll.
  • Offensively, ECU is hitting .283 with four players batting .300 or better. Kanisha Anderson holds a team-high .368 batting average, followed by Anna Sawyer at .349. Jenna Kroll has driven in a team-best 22 RBI and ranks third on the team with a .341 average.
  • In the circle, the Pirates' pitching staff has a cumulative ERA of 3.67 in 194.1 innings with 100 strikeouts and 94 walks. Redshirt sophomore Julia Apostolakos has been the staff ace, leading the team in innings (75.1), appearances (17), wins (nine) and strikeouts (50) with a 3.62 ERA. 
DEW NAMED CAA CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK
  • Junior pitcher Anna Dew was named the CAA Co-Pitcher of the Week on March 10, earning her second career league weekly honor. Dew shared the award with Towson's Olivia Trombley.
  • Dew helped the Phoenix to a series sweep in its CAA-opening weekend versus North Carolina A&T. The Harrisburg, N.C., native went 2-0 with a 1.14 ERA in 12.1 innings, striking out 18 batters while holding the Aggies to a .103 batting average.
  • Dew tied her career high with 10 strikeouts in the series opener on Friday, earning the complete-game victory. She became the first Elon pitcher since 2018 to record two double-digit strikeout games in the same season.
  • In the finale on Sunday, Dew fanned eight more batters in 5.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit while earning her second win of the weekend.
PRESEASON PRAISE
  • Elon had three players named to the 2026 Preseason All-CAA Team, as announced by the league office on Jan. 27. Chloe Hatzopoulos, Greta Hessenthaler and Kayla Wilson earned preseason recognition, while the Phoenix was also selected as the favorite to win the league's newly formed South Division.
  • Hatzopoulos returns as Elon's leader in home runs (11), runs scored (41) and RBI (34). The Huntersville, N.C., native batted .295 last season, earned All-CAA Second Team honors and was named to the league's All-Tournament Team after returning from injury. The redshirt senior claimed one of four outfield spots on the preseason team.
  • Hessenthaler provides another key returning offensive presence after earning All-CAA First Team honors as a sophomore. The Liberty, N.C., native batted .354 while starting at second base, scoring 38 runs and recording 56 hits, including seven doubles. She also paced the Phoenix with 32 walks, added two triples and reached base safely in 34 consecutive games.
  • Wilson earned Preseason All-CAA honors as a utility/non-pitcher after being named to the league's All-Rookie Team last season. The Graham, N.C., native batted .319 in 32 games with three doubles and eight RBI, highlighted by a game-winning RBI single in Elon's 5-4 victory at Delaware.
  • Coming off its first-ever CAA Tournament championship, Elon was selected as the South Division favorite with four first-place votes and 23 points. Campbell finished second with 20 points and one first-place vote, followed by UNCW (17), Charleston (15, one first-place vote), N.C. A&T (8) and Hampton (7).
