Elon Heads To NC State

Phoenix Faces Wolfpack Before Start Of CAA Play

ELON – The Elon softball team travels to Raleigh for an early-week contest at NC State on Tuesday. First pitch between the Phoenix (4-14) and the Wolfpack (13-7) is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Dail Softball Stadium.

SERIES HISTORY
  • NC State leads Elon in the all-time series, 19-9, dating back to 2004. Entering Tuesday's matchup, the Wolfpack have won seven straight, with six of those games coming in Raleigh.
  • The two teams last met a year ago, with NC State earning a 4-0 win over the Phoenix at Dail Softball Stadium.
  • Elon's last win in the series came in 2019 with a 5-4 victory at Hunt Softball Park. The Phoenix's most recent win in Raleigh was a 4-2 decision in 2016.
 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Phoenix co-hosted the Elon-UNCG Tournament this past weekend. The Maroon and Gold faced UNCG, Indiana and Charleston Southern, going 1-3 at the event.
  • Elon defeated Charleston Southern for its lone win last Saturday, blanking the Buccaneers, 8-0. Junior Anna Dew made history, tossing the program's fourth career perfect game while striking out six batters.
  • Mauri Murray hit .444 to lead the Phoenix at the plate during the tournament, going 4-for-9. The Marvin, N.C., native recorded a pair of multi-hit games versus Charleston Southern and UNCG while also making her first start since returning from injury last season.
 
AROUND THE HORN
  • Elon is slashing .232/.330/.339 on the season, totaling 67 runs scored with 27 extra-base hits and 54 RBI. The Phoenix has also recorded four double-digit hit performances, including an 11-hit outing versus Charleston Southern.
  • Redshirt senior Chloe Hatzopoulos is hitting a team-high .294 among the Phoenix regulars. The Huntersville, N.C., native has 15 hits on the year, including at least one hit in four of Elon's past five games.
  • Greta Hessenthaler and Teagan Baulsir are the other Phoenix players with double-digit hits, with 13 and 12, respectively. Baulsir leads the team in home runs (two), RBI (nine) and walks (11).
  • Lani Wyrick ranks second on the team in walks with 10 and leads the Phoenix in stolen bases, going 6-for-6 in swiped bags. The sophomore also leads the CAA in defensive assists with 44.
  • Dew is one of four pitchers who saw action at the Elon-UNCG Tournament last weekend. The Harrisburg, N.C., native leads the Phoenix with a 3.96 ERA in 40.2 innings and holds a 3-3 record. Her 40 strikeouts rank fourth in the CAA. She and fellow junior Lia Miller are tied for the team lead in appearances with 11.
  • Elon is in its 49th season of competitive softball, the 37th fastpitch season and the 27th at the Division I level.
  • The Phoenix returned 13 letterwinners and five starters from last season's roster. In the circle, Elon brings back three experienced pitchers in juniors Anna Dew, Lia Miller and Kyra Leonard.
  • Elon also welcomes nine newcomers to the 2026 roster, including six freshmen and three transfers.
  • Head coach Kathy Bocock is in her 15th season leading the Phoenix. The winningest coach in program history, Bocock has 358 wins at Elon and 593 career victories across 29 seasons as a head coach.
 
SCOUTING NC STATE
  • The Wolfpack are 13-7 on the season and enter Tuesday's matchup on a 10-game winning streak. NC State went 5-0 at its home tournament, the Wolfpack Classic, last weekend and is 10-0 at home this year.
  • NC State went 25-29 last season and 6-18 in the ACC. The Wolfpack were tabbed to finish 12th in the 2026 ACC Preseason Poll.
  • As a team, NC State is batting .294, with four players hitting .300 or better. Carly Short leads the team with a .372 average, while Maia Townsend is next at .349 with a team-best 22 hits.
  • Lily Livingston and Kendall Simmers are the primary run producers for the Wolfpack, with the duo combining for 11 home runs and 43 RBI.
  • In the circle, three pitchers have primarily toed the rubber for NC State, which has posted a 4.19 ERA in 123.2 innings with 96 strikeouts and 64 walks. Wynn Gore owns a 1.43 ERA in 44.0 innings, while Morgen Talley is 6-1 with a 3.10 ERA in 38.1 frames and leads the team with 35 strikeouts.
 
PRESEASON PRAISE
  • Elon had three players named to the 2026 Preseason All-CAA Team, as announced by the league office on Jan. 27. Chloe Hatzopoulos, Greta Hessenthaler and Kayla Wilson earned preseason recognition, while the Phoenix was also selected as the favorite to win the league's newly formed South Division.
  • Hatzopoulos returns as Elon's leader in home runs (11), runs scored (41) and RBI (34). The Huntersville, N.C., native batted .295 last season, earned All-CAA Second Team honors and was named to the league's All-Tournament Team after returning from injury. The redshirt senior claimed one of four outfield spots on the preseason team.
  • Hessenthaler provides another key returning offensive presence after earning All-CAA First Team honors as a sophomore. The Liberty, N.C., native batted .354 while starting at second base, scoring 38 runs and recording 56 hits, including seven doubles. She also paced the Phoenix with 32 walks, added two triples and reached base safely in 34 consecutive games.
  • Wilson earned Preseason All-CAA honors as a utility/non-pitcher after being named to the league's All-Rookie Team last season. The Graham, N.C., native batted .319 in 32 games with three doubles and eight RBI, highlighted by a game-winning RBI single in Elon's 5-4 victory at Delaware.
  • Coming off its first-ever CAA Tournament championship, Elon was selected as the South Division favorite with four first-place votes and 23 points. Campbell finished second with 20 points and one first-place vote, followed by UNCW (17), Charleston (15, one first-place vote), N.C. A&T (8) and Hampton (7).
 
ON DECK
  • Elon opens CAA series play this weekend, hosting Piedmont Triad rival North Carolina A&T for a three-game set Friday through Sunday.
