Phoenix Closes Nonconference Play Against Wofford

Elon Returns Home Following Series Win At UNCW

ELON – The Elon softball team wraps up its nonconference schedule this week as the Phoenix (11-19) hosts Wofford (22-5) on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Hunt Softball Park.
 
FOLLOW THE PHOENIX SERIES HISTORY
  • Tuesday marks the first-ever meeting between the Phoenix and the Terriers on the softball diamond.
  • Wofford is the second current Southern Conference member Elon will face this season after previously taking on UNCG in a pair of matchups on Feb. 28 and March 1. 
LAST TIME OUT
  • The Phoenix traveled to UNCW last weekend for its second CAA series of the season, going 2-1 against the Seahawks to improve to 5-1 in league play.
  • Elon won the first two games of the series, shutting out UNCW 2-0 in the opener before earning a 4-2 victory in game two. The Seahawks avoided the sweep with a 1-0 win in the finale.
  • The Phoenix offense batted .203 on the weekend, with three players hitting .300 or better. Payton Swart led the Maroon and Gold with a .500 average (4-for-8) and recorded a pair of multi-hit games. Chloe Hatzopoulos (.333) and Jenna Klein (.300) also had strong outings at the plate. 
DEW NAMED CAA CO-PITCHER OF THE WEEK (AGAIN)
  • For the second time this season, Anna Dew earned CAA Co-Pitcher of the Week honors, as announced by the league office on Monday. She shared the accolade with Charleston's Mackenzie Mathis.
  • The Harrisburg, N.C., native went 1-1 in the circle, posting a 0.54 ERA over 13.0 innings while striking out nine batters. She scattered four hits in a 2-0 series-opening shutout on Friday, earning her second shutout of the year. She added five strikeouts in her second complete-game outing of the weekend on Sunday, allowing just one run.
  • This marks Dew's second weekly honor this season after also sharing the award on March 10 with Towson's Olivia Trombley. 
BOCOCK REACHES 600 CAREER WINS
  • Elon head coach Kathy Bocock earned her 600th career win against UNCW on Saturday. The winningest coach in program history, it was also her 365th victory in 15 seasons with the Phoenix.
  • Bocock totaled 235 wins as head coach at Averett from 1993-2007 before taking over at Elon in 2012.
  • Among active Division I softball coaches, Bocock is tied for 48th on the career wins list with 600 victories over 29 seasons.
AROUND THE HORN
  • The Phoenix leads the CAA South Division at 5-1 following its series win at UNCW. College of Charleston is second at 7-2, followed by UNCW and Campbell tied at 4-2.
  • Elon is slashing .238/.322/.332 with 110 runs scored, 38 extra-base hits and 90 RBI. The Phoenix is also 10-0 when outhitting its opponent.
  • Chloe Hatzopoulos leads the team with a .325 average. The redshirt senior also paces Elon in hits (27), total bases (39) and RBI (14). She is five runs shy of 100 for her career and one home run away from becoming the fourth player in program history with 30 career homers.
  • Swart is second on the team with a .275 average and is hitting .444 (8-for-18) over her last seven games. The Delaplane, Va., native is tied for the team lead in extra-base hits (six), including a team-high five doubles.
  • Lani Wyrick leads Elon with 12 stolen bases (12-for-12). The sophomore ranks second in the CAA in total assists (69) and assists per game (2.30).
  • Rookie Jenna Klein had a career day in Saturday's 4-2 win at UNCW, going 3-for-4 with a run scored. She became the fourth Phoenix player this season to record three hits in a game.
  • Dew leads Elon in innings pitched (77.0), ERA (2.73), complete games (seven) and strikeouts (74). She ranks second in the CAA in strikeouts and third in strikeouts per seven innings (6.8).
  • Elon is in its 49th season of competitive softball, the program's 37th fastpitch season and 27th at the Division I level.
  • Head coach Kathy Bocock is in her 15th season leading the Phoenix. The winningest coach in program history, Bocock has 365 wins at Elon and 600 career victories across 29 seasons as a head coach. 
SCOUTING WOFFORD
  • In its third season as a program, Wofford is 22-5 overall and is coming off a 2-1 SoCon series win at Chattanooga. The Terriers have won seven of their last eight games.
  • Offensively, Wofford is hitting .358 with eight players batting .300 or better, including two above .400. Desirae Devine leads the team with a .483 average, followed by Addison Lucier at .420. Brianna Stanley is hitting .392 and leads the team in home runs (six) and RBI (33).
  • In the circle, Wofford has relied on three primary pitchers, posting a 3.87 ERA over 172.0 innings with 107 strikeouts to 76 walks. Abby Greenwood leads the staff in innings (57.2), ERA (2.43) and wins (nine).
  • Elon alum Kara Shutt '18 is in her third season as associate head coach for the Terriers. Shutt was one of the most decorated players in program history, earning All-America honors in 2018. She holds the program and CAA record for career doubles (63) and ranks second in school history in hits (253). 
PRESEASON PRAISE
  • Elon had three players named to the 2026 Preseason All-CAA Team, as announced by the league office on Jan. 27. Chloe Hatzopoulos, Greta Hessenthaler and Kayla Wilson earned preseason recognition, while the Phoenix was also selected as the favorite to win the league's newly formed South Division.
  • Hatzopoulos returns as Elon's leader in home runs (11), runs scored (41) and RBI (34). The Huntersville, N.C., native batted .295 last season, earned All-CAA Second Team honors and was named to the league's All-Tournament Team after returning from injury. The redshirt senior claimed one of four outfield spots on the preseason team.
  • Hessenthaler provides another key returning offensive presence after earning All-CAA First Team honors as a sophomore. The Liberty, N.C., native batted .354 while starting at second base, scoring 38 runs and recording 56 hits, including seven doubles. She also paced the Phoenix with 32 walks, added two triples and reached base safely in 34 consecutive games.
  • Wilson earned Preseason All-CAA honors as a utility/non-pitcher after being named to the league's All-Rookie Team last season. The Graham, N.C., native batted .319 in 32 games with three doubles and eight RBI, highlighted by a game-winning RBI single in Elon's 5-4 victory at Delaware.
  • Coming off its first-ever CAA Tournament championship, Elon was selected as the South Division favorite with four first-place votes and 23 points. Campbell finished second with 20 points and one first-place vote, followed by UNCW (17), Charleston (15, one first-place vote), N.C. A&T (8) and Hampton (7).

  • The Phoenix hosts Campbell for a three-game CAA series Friday through Sunday. All games will stream on FloCollege.
