ELON – The Elon men's tennis team (4-10) dropped a heartbreaker to Georgia Southern (9-6) on Friday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, dropping the final two singles courts in a 4-3 loss.
After losing the doubles point, the Phoenix won three of the first four singles matches to take a 3-2 lead. However, the Eagles won the final two singles matches in final sets to eke out a one-point win.
The Rundown
- Georgia Southern took the doubles point with wins on Courts 2 and 3. The Eagles won on Court 2 in the first match to finish.
- Making their first appearance since being named CAA Doubles Team of the Week on Tuesday, Veljko Krstic and Nikola Parichkov delivered a 6-4 win on Court 1 over Gregoire Delattre and Davis Taylor. The Elon tandem trailed by an early break but erased its deficit and broke in the final game of the match to win. It was the team-best fifth win of the spring for Elon's top pair.
- Georgia Southern overcame a 5-0 deficit to win in a tiebreak at No. 3 doubles and take the opening point.
- The Eagles stretched their lead to 2-0 with a win at No. 4 singles.
- Krstic cut Elon's deficit in half with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Albert Saar at No. 1 singles. It was Krstic's third straight singles victory, all coming in straight sets, as the senior is on his longest winning streak of the spring. He is now alone in second on the Phoenix with five dual singles wins this season.
- Rafael Ymer tied the contest with a 7-5, 6-1 victory against Delattre. It was also Ymer's third straight win in singles and his team-best 10th of the spring. The victory was Ymer's first to come in straight sets since March 7 after each of his previous three wins came in deciding sets.
