Phoenix Tests No. 56 Old Dominion

Monarchs Hold On For 4-2 Win Over Elon

ELON – The final two singles matches Sunday between Elon (4-11) and No. 56 Old Dominion (15-4) came down to third sets, with the Monarchs clinching a 4-2 victory by winning the deciding frame on Court 4 at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center.

Old Dominion took the doubles point and won two of the first three singles matches to take a 3-1 lead. However, Elon fought back with a win at the No. 2 spot while Jack Curtis and Oskar Antinheimo went to final sets.

The match was Elon's fifth against an ITA ranked team this spring.

The Rundown
  • The Monarchs won a tight doubles point with wins at the Nos. 1 and 3 spots.
  • Playing together for the first time, Jack Curtis and Veljko Krstic pushed Old Dominion's top doubles duo of Adam Majchrzak and Thomas Nelson, as the teams traded holds of serve in the first eight games. However, the Monarchs broke for a 5-4 lead and then served out a 6-4 win to secure the opening point for Old Dominion.
  • Antinheimo and Rafael Ymer were tied 4-4 on Court 2 against Zech Hamrouni and Piet Steveker when the match was halted.
  • The Monarchs went ahead 2-0 after picking up a win on Court 6.
  • Krstic put Elon on the board with a convincing 6-3, 6-2 victory over Majchrzak at the No. 1 spot. It was Krstic's fourth straight win, as the senior has won eight consecutive sets.
  • Old Dominion restored a two-point lead with a win on Court 5. After dropping the first set against Steveker, Parichkov went ahead by a break early in the second and led 5-4 before Steveker won the final three games to seal the win.
  • Ymer again brought Elon back within one with a victory at the No. 2 spot. The sophomore defeated Jean-Karim Oliver de Sardan 6-2, 6-4 for his fourth straight win and 11th of the season. Ymer went down a break in the second set and trailed 4-3 before reeling off the final three games of the match.
  • The final two singles matches went to final sets on Courts 3 and 4. Antinheimo won the first set against Hamrouni at the No. 4 spot but was taken to a deciding frame. In the third, Hamrouni broke Antinheimo twice to take a 4-1 lead, but Antinheimo got one of the breaks back and pulled back to 4-3 and 5-4. Hamrouni held to love in his final service game to clinch a 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 win and secure the winning point for Old Dominion.
  • On Court 3, Curtis overcame dropping the first set in a tiebreak to win the second, 6-0. He led 3-2 in the third with the match on serve when the contest was halted.
  • The loss was Elon's fifth to come against an ITA ranked opponent this season.
  • The Phoenix has now won at both Nos. 1-2 singles in four straight matches.
