ELON – The Elon softball team received a complete-game, nine-strikeout performance from junior
Anna Dew, but could not keep pace with Campbell as the Camels earned a 3-1 win in extra innings in the CAA series opener on Friday at Hunt Softball Park.
Â
Elon (11-22, 5-2 CAA) dropped its third straight game overall and saw its three-game win streak against Campbell snapped as the Camels improved to 18-14 overall and 5-2 in league play. The loss leaves the two teams tied in the South Division standings.

The Rundown
The Phoenix struck first in the bottom of the third. Wirt drew a one-out walk and came around to score on Hessenthaler's two-out double to left-center field for a 1-0 lead.
Â
Campbell answered in the fourth to even the score. An Elon error allowed a runner to reach before an RBI double tied the game at 1-1.
Â
The Camels threatened in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs, but Dew escaped the jam with a flyout to right.
Â
Elon's defense came through in the seventh to keep the game tied. After an error and a walk put two runners on, Campbell attempted to take the lead on a single to right.
Payton Swart fired a throw home, where Wirt applied the tag to cut down the go-ahead run.
Â
Neither team could break through until the tenth inning. Campbell opened the frame with a single and moved the runner into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Two walks loaded the bases before Dew recorded her ninth strikeout for the second out.
Â
The Camels then delivered the go-ahead run, as a two-out single to left plated two runs. Campbell was later retired in a rundown to end the inning, but took a 3-1 lead into the bottom half.
Â
Elon put the tying run at the plate with no outs after Klein drew a leadoff walk in the tenth. Huber, however, worked around the threat, retiring the next two batters, including a game-ending double play.
