ELON – Elon baseball (10-17, 3-9 CAA) dropped the final game of their weekend series to Monmouth (14-10, 10-2 CAA) on Sunday. The Hawks led wire-to-wire and finished off the series with an 8-2 win.
Jackson Alford was a bright spot at the top of the lineup. Alford finished with three hits to go with a run scored on a wild pitch.
Brent Smith made his first start of the season at third base and collected his first career multi-hit game.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Monmouth took the lead early off Cole Taylor with a second inning double.
- The Hawks continued to add runs early with two runs in the third and a run in the fifth.
- Elon used a middle inning surge to pull within a pair of runs. Brian DuRoff brought home a run on a sacrifice fly, and Alford scored on a wild pitch to make it a 4-2 game.
- Monmouth countered with a run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to lead 7-2 going into the ninth.
- The Hawks added a run in the ninth to cement the weekend sweep with an 8-2 win.
QUICK HITS
- Jackson Alford finished with his second three-hit game on Sunday and his 11th multi-hit game of the season.
- Brent Smith made his first start of the season at third base. Smith collected his first career multi-hit game with a pair of singles.
- Jake Hajdu collected a hit in all three games of the weekend series thanks to a second inning single.
- Brian DuRoff finished with the lone RBI on Sunday. DuRoff reached twice with a pair of walks as well.
- Gar Hindle was 1-for-2 at the plate with a walk.
- Cole Taylor made his first weekend start of his career on Sunday. Taylor got the loss but went two innings, struck out two and allowed just one run.
- Mike Staiano thew another scoreless inning with a strikeout in the seventh.
