Elon Drops CAA Opener To A&T

Strange’s Strong Seven Innings Not Enough

ELON – For the second straight weekend, the Elon Phoenix (6-7, 0-1 CAA) got a quality start from Brian Strange on a Friday night. However, the Phoenix could not pull out the win as the fell to North Carolina A&T (3-10, 1-0 CAA), 2-1.
 
Brian Strange allowed two hits or less for the third time in four starts. He finished with a season-high seven innings pitched and allowed a lone hit in the first inning.
 
Jackson Alford reached three times on Friday night and stole two bases in the loss. Brian DuRoff finished with a 2-for-5 night at the plate with a pair of singles.
 
The Phoenix falls to 6-7 while North Carolina A&T improves 3-10.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Aggies struck in the 1st inning with an RBI single to right field to take a 1-0 lead.
  • North Carolina A&T added another run in the top of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly to double their advantage.
  • Elon countered in the 5th with a bases loaded hit-by-pitch to Jose Mariano to drive in a run.
  • Strange continued to deal throughout the game as he retired the last 18 batters he faced from the 2nd inning through the 7th inning.
  • A leadoff single from Lawson Wheeler in the 9th could not ignite the offense as Elon could not drive in the tying run in the final frame.

  • Elon falls to 6-7 on the season.
  • Elon loses their CAA opener for the third consecutive season.
  • Brian Strange pitched another beauty on Friday night. The graduate pitched seven innings while only allowing a single hit. He went a season long seven innings and struck out five.
  • Jackson Alford delivered another solid performance with a 1-for-4 night. Alford reached base three times and swiped two bags in the loss.
  • Brian DuRoff put together another multi-hit night, his 4th of the season.
  • Jose Mariano got back into the hit column for the 4th time in five games. Mariano also drove in the only run of the night for the Phoenix.
  • Sam Nomura delivered two innings of scoreless relief that dropped his ERA down to 0.71.

Elon returns to Latham Park Saturday afternoon for game two of the series with A&T. First pitch between the Phoenix and Aggies will be at 2 PM.
