GREENSBORO – The Elon baseball team (12-17, 4-9 CAA) cruised to a 10-3 victory over North Carolina A&T (8-20, 2-8 CAA) on Friday night. The win marked Elon's second straight over an in-state opponent and snapped a four-game skid in CAA play.
Brian Strange turned in one of his strongest outings of the season, tossing seven innings and allowing just one run to earn the win.
Offensively, the Phoenix capitalized on a fast start and multiple multi-hit performances to put the game out of reach early.
Jose Mariano led the charge with his second home run of the season and two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon wasted no time setting the tone in the opening inning. Brian DuRoff sparked the scoring with an RBI double, and Gar Hindle followed with a groundout to extend the lead. Back-to-back singles from Mariano and Gavin Bogdanchik pushed the advantage to 4-0.
- Strange kept the Aggies quiet with three scoreless frames before Elon added on in the fourth, as Nate Sterling delivered an RBI double.
- Mariano added to the lead in the fifth with a solo home run, giving Elon a 6-0 cushion.
- North Carolina A&T broke through in the bottom half of the inning with a sacrifice fly, but Elon quickly responded. In the sixth, Hindle drove in another run and Jared Hall added a two-RBI single to stretch the lead to 9-1.
- Sterling later drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to push Elon into double digits.
- The Aggies plated two runs in the ninth, but the outcome was never in doubt as Elon secured the 10-3 win.
