Elon Upended At Gardner-Webb

Phoenix Slugged Three Homers In Loss

BOILING SPRINGS – The Elon baseball team (13-19, 5-10 CAA) slugged three home runs Tuesday afternoon, but fell short at Gardner-Webb (16-17, 5-7 Big South) 14-11.

Jared Hall had another standout game at the plate, finishing a triple shy of the cycle. Brian DuRoff stayed hot at the plate with another home run and three RBIs. Henry Wolfe added the first home run of his career on Tuesday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Gardner-Webb jumped out in front early with three runs in the bottom of the first.
  • Elon responded with a run in the second with a Brent Smith RBI single.
  • The Runnin' Bulldogs added three more in the bottom of the second to take a 6-1 lead.
  • The Phoenix brought home four runs in the top of the third to make it a one-run game. A Jared Hall single and Connor Roche sacrifice fly brought home a run before a Kevin Denty double drove in a pair of runs.
  • Henry Wolfe hit his first career home run in the fourth to tie the game at six.
  • Gardner-Webb answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead.
  • Elon climbed back into the game with a Hall two-run home run to halve the deficit.
  • Brian DuRoff tied the score at 10 in the sixth with a two-run home run.
  • Two Gardner-Webb home runs expanded the Runnin' Bulldogs' lead to four.
  • In the eighth, a DuRoff double would be the last run driven in of the game as Elon fell 14-11.
