Elon Pushes NC State In Raleigh

Hill Scores First Career Goal In Loss To Wolfpack

RALEIGH – A second-half push by the Elon women's soccer team (2-1) came up just short Sunday night against NC State (4-0), as the Wolfpack held off the Phoenix, 2-1, at Dail Soccer Field.

Jessica Hill scored directly off a free kick in the 77th minute to bring Elon within a goal of the Wolfpack. The ball sailed under the crossbar before entering the net and was initially ruled no goal before being overturned upon video review.

The Phoenix generated six shots after halftime, creating scoring several scoring chances. In goal, Naomi Person made five saves as the Phoenix defense limited the Wolfpack to just two goals on their 22 attempts.
 


How It Happened
  • NC State struck early, with Jade Bordeleau converting in the fourth minute to put the Wolfpack ahead, 1-0.
  • The Phoenix took two shots late in the first half, coming from Nicole Kleyner and Grace Gelhaus. The Wolfpack maintained their 1-0 lead entering halftime.
  • Gelhaus put another chance on net in the 50th minute but it was corralled by NC State's goalkeeper to keep the Phoenix off the board.
  • Isa Murdock created another Elon opportunity in the 62nd minute, putting another shot on target that was stymied by NC State.
  • The Wolfpack doubled their lead in the 66th minute via an Erica Roberts tally.
  • Elon created a free kick opportunity from outside the 18-yard box in the 77th minute. Hill took the attempt and launched a shot that started above the cross bar but began to dip as it flew through the air. The ball finished just underneath the cross bar, dropping straight down behind the NC State keeper. The ruling on the field was no goal, but after a review, Elon was on the board with its first tally of the night.
  • The Phoenix took another shot in the 79th minute but the attempt was blocked. It was Elon's final shot of the night.
  • NC State created more chances in the closing minutes but could not convert again, as the match finished in a 2-1 result.
 
Notable Numbers
  • Hill's goal was the first of her career in her 42nd appearance with the Phoenix. The junior defender had three assists in her first two seasons.
  • Four Elon field players went the full 90 minutes – Hill, Megan Dwyer, Isa Murdock and Alexis Pierce.
  • Gelhaus and Murdock took two shots each to pace the Phoenix. Both of Gelhaus' attempts were on goal.
  • Hill, Kleyner, Pierce and Talia Feigin also took a shot against the Wolfpack.
  • Person's five saves were a career best. This was the first time this season Elon conceded multiple goals in a match.
  • NC State outshot Elon, 22-8, on the night but the Wolfpack only finished with a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
  • This was the first time Elon has scored a goal in its last five trips to Raleigh. Before tonight, the Phoenix last converted a goal at NC State in 2008.
