NORFOLK, Va. – The Elon men's soccer team (1-1) was outpaced by Old Dominion (2-0) in a high-scoring affair Monday night, with the Monarchs besting the Phoenix, 5-3, at ODU Soccer Stadium.

The match featured four goals in a six-minute stretch during the first half and saw three first-half lead changes. Of the 14 combined shots put on target in the match, six found the back of the net.

Tønnes Daland scored his first career Elon goal with Jordin Wilson and Jahmir Flowers also converting for the Phoenix. Daland added an assist for a three-point night with Mohamed Kallon and Martin Kozak each joining the scoresheet with helpers of their own.

How It Happened

• Old Dominion scored the game's first goal just 61 seconds into the contest, converting off a corner kick opportunity. 
• Mikolaj Lenarcik made his first save of the season in the 19th minute, denying a shot by Old Dominion's Alessandro Maldonado.
• Elon leveled the score in the 33rd minute when Daland ripped a shot from outside the box that deflected off a Monarch defender and into the goal.
• Just 80 seconds after the Daland goal, the Phoenix took its first lead of the contest. Kozak played a ball from near midfield up to a sprinting Wilson, who gathered it and spun free from a defender in the left side of the box before firing a shot that rattled off the far post and into the net for a 2-1 Elon lead.

• The Monarchs answered just over a minute later with a tying goal before taking the lead back on a penalty kick in the 38th minute. Four goals were scored in six minutes of game time, with each team netting a pair. Old Dominion entered halftime with a 3-2 lead.
• Much like the first half, Old Dominion scored quickly to open the second period, converting just over a minute and a half following the break to take the first two-goal lead of the match for either team.
• The Phoenix earned a corner opportunity in the 53rd minute. Joe Taylor crossed the ball into the box where chaos ensued at the goal line. Old Dominion's goalkeeper attempted to punch the ball out of harm's way, but Daland headed it out of the air, finding the head of Flowers who nudged the ball into the net to bring the Phoenix back within a goal.
• Elon's defense thwarted an Old Dominion scoring chance in the 60th minute, as Kosei Sasaki blocked an initial shot attempt on the goal line before a rebound attempt deflected off both Sasaki and Magnus Jacobsen before the ball could cross the line.
• The Monarchs scored an insurance goal in the 79th minute to restore their two-goal advantage. They held on over the final 10-plus minutes to secure the victory.

 
Notable Numbers

• Daland tallied a team-high three points in just his second appearance with the Phoenix. The points were the first of his Elon career.
• Wilson's goal was the third of his Phoenix career and the first to come away from Rudd Field. The senior has now scored in three of his last six appearances dating back to last season after going without a goal in his first 39 matches.
• Flowers has now scored in each of Elon's first two matches this season and leads the Phoenix with five points (2 goals, 1 assist). The senior has already matched his season-best goal total of two, which he achieved last fall. 
• Kozak's assist on Wilson's goal was his second of the campaign. The senior has scored four points through Elon's first two contests. 
• Kallon was credited with the assist on Daland's goal. It was the first point of his Elon tenure in his debut appearance with the Phoenix.
• Lenarcik made his first career start in goal for the Phoenix, making four saves.
• Jacobsen was the lone Phoenix to play the full 90 minutes. Weston Jonke logged 80 minutes in Elon's midfield.
• Joining Kallon in making his Elon debut was Ben Madore, who played 16 reserve minutes.
• Old Dominion doubled up the Phoenix in shots, 16-8. Eight different players attempted a shot for Elon. The Monarchs outshot the Phoenix 9-3 in the second half.
• The eight total goals were the most in an Elon regular season game since the Phoenix defeated Rutgers, 8-1, in 2018.
• The eight combined goals came after Elon and Old Dominion played to a scoreless draw last season at Rudd Field.
