ELON – A late goal by Magnus Jacobsen helped Elon (1-1-1, 0-0-1 CAA) secure its first point in the CAA South standings Sunday, as the Phoenix played William & Mary (1-2-1, 0-1-1 CAA) to a 1-1 tie at Rudd Field in the conference opener for both teams. 

After William & Mary scored in the opening minutes of the contest, Jacobsen leveled the match at 1-1 in the 74th minute, heading the ball into the goal off a corner kick played into the box by Weston Jonke.

The Phoenix outshot the Tribe 19-9, including an 11-4 advantage after halftime. Drew Hartman returned to Elon's net, making a pair of saves.

How It Happened

• The Tribe took an early lead with a second-minute goal.
• Joe Taylor attempted Elon's first shot of the day in the 14th minute, with Dominik Renz following up with Elon's first on target in the 16th minute.
• Both teams traded chances throughout the rest of the first half, with Elon taking the final four shots of the period. William & Mary maintained its 1-0 lead entering halftime.
• William & Mary generated early pressure in the second half, forcing Hartman's first save of the day in the 61st minute.
• Flowers put a shot on goal in the 71st minute but it was stopped by William & Mary's goalkeeper. Elon continued to create chances shortly after, with Flowers and Kosei Sasaki both attempting shots that were off target.
• In the 74th minute, Elon earned a corner kick opportunity, which Jonke took for the Phoenix. The junior crossed the ball into the box and found the head of Jacobsen, who flicked a header past the goalkeeper and into the net to tie the match.
• Hartman made a key save in the 84th minute, coming forward to deny an Alex Garrison shot.
• Daire McCarthy had a chance for a game-winning tally in the final minute. After getting the ball at the top of the box, McCarthy put a shot toward the left post that William & Mary's goalkeeper reached out to deny. The Phoenix had a corner kick chance in the closing seconds but could not find an equalizing goal.

 
Notable Numbers

• Jacobsen's goal was the second of his career and the first since Elon's CAA Tournament semifinal against Campbell last season. Both the sophomore's goals have come at Rudd Field.
• Jonke's assist was his third with the Phoenix, with both the previous two coming in last year's CAA Tournament.
• Elon had 13 different players attempt a shot, with Flowers, Jacobsen, Renz, Sasaki, Diego Thompson and Jordin Wilson all taking two shots each.
• Jacobsen logged the full 90 minutes on Elon's back line, as did Tønnes Daland. In total, 18 Phoenix saw the field.
• Hartman made his second start in goal after Mikolaj Lenarcik started for the Phoenix on Monday at Old Dominion.
• The Phoenix created 11 corner kicks, compared to just three by the Tribe.
• Taylor and Ben Madore both made their first starts of the season for the Phoenix.
• Elon is now unbeaten in its last seven matches against the Tribe. The Phoenix is 4-0-3 in those contests.
