Phoenix Drops CAA Decision At UNCW

Elon Falls 1-0 To Seahawks

WILMINGTON – The Elon men's soccer team (1-2-1, 0-1-1 CAA) suffered a 1-0 setback Saturday against UNCW (3-0-1, 1-0-0 CAA) at UNCW Soccer Stadium.

In a battle of the teams picked to finish first and second in the CAA South preseason poll, the Seahawks got the better of the Phoenix courtesy of the game's only goal in the seventh minute.

The Phoenix generated nine shot attempts but could not solve UNCW goalkeeper Alex Kron, who was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week on Monday. The Seahawks have yet to concede a goal this season through their first four matches.

How It Happened
  • The Seahawks scored on the first shot of the match in the seventh minute. After drawing a free kick from the right side of the field, Jake Roberts deflected an initial shot attempt past Drew Hartman to put UNCW on the board.
  • Martin Kozak registered Elon's first shot of the contest in the 19th minute, forcing a save by Kron. Diego Thompson had a chance of his own to score in the 37th minute but it was again turned away by the UNCW keeper.
  • The Seahawks maintained their 1-0 lead entering halftime.
  • Neither team recorded a shot in the second half until the 62nd minute, when Ben Madore and Tønnes Daland attempted shots in an eight-second span.
  • In the 66th minute, Hartman came up with the game's biggest save, rising to deny a shot by UNCW's Cameron Keay that was dipping just below the crossbar.
  • Elon mounted a last gasp in the closing moments, but a shot in the final minute by Joe Taylor was stopped as the Seahawks preserved their one-goal victory.

Notable Numbers
  • Elon and UNCW both attempted nine shots and five shots on goal. Seven of Elon's nine shots came in the second half.
  • Taylor and Jahmir Flowers led the Phoenix with a pair of shot attempts each. Seven Elon players attempted at least one shot in the match.
  • Hartman made four saves in his third start of the campaign. He has now started in goal for both of Elon's CAA contests.
  • Magnus Jacobsen and Weston Jonke both went the full distance for Elon. Jacobsen has now logged all 360 minutes on the Phoenix back line this season.
  • The Seahawks are yet to concede a goal in 360 minutes of game time this season. Elon's nine shot attempts were the second most against UNCW this season.
  • The loss snapped Elon's five-match unbeaten streak against the Seahawks.
