PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Elon football held No. 8/13 Rhode Island without a touchdown for three quarters Saturday afternoon, but the Rams pulled away with 28 fourth-quarter points to hand the Phoenix a 31-10 loss at Centreville Bank Stadium.
 
Elon (2-1, 0-1 CAA) led 3-0 at halftime and was tied with Rhode Island (2-1, 1-0 CAA) entering the fourth quarter. The Phoenix finished with 306 yards of offense to Rhode Island's 286, but five turnovers proved costly as the Rams scored 21 points off Elon giveaways.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

• The Phoenix defense answered an early turnover on Elon's opening possession by keeping Rhode Island off the scoreboard. The Rams took over at the Elon 47 following an interception but were forced to punt three plays later.
• Elon again turned away Rhode Island after a turnover early in the second quarter. The Rams recovered a fumble at the Elon 44, but Dillon Pardue opened the ensuing possession with a seven-yard sack and Rhode Island punted three plays later.
• Elon broke the scoreless tie late in the first half. Kamerin McDowell-Moore ripped off runs of 16 and 10 yards on a seven-play drive before Luke Barnes connected on a 46-yard field goal to give the Phoenix a 3-0 lead with 4:44 remaining in the second quarter.
• Barnes had a 59-yard attempt blocked with 43 seconds left before halftime, giving Rhode Island possession near midfield. The Rams moved to the Elon 19, but a 36-yard field goal attempt missed as time expired to preserve the Phoenix's 3-0 halftime advantage.
• Eric Jones gave Elon an opportunity to extend its lead early in the third quarter, intercepting Tyler Budge at the Rhode Island 49 and returning it 14 yards to the Rams' 35. McDowell-Moore carried five times for 29 yards as the Phoenix moved inside the Rhode Island 5, but a 21-yard field goal attempt missed.
• Rhode Island tied the game on its next possession when Josh Hamel converted a 51-yard field goal with 6:33 remaining in the third quarter.
• After Connor Dunn pinned the Rams at their own 2 with a 42-yard punt, Rhode Island put together the game's defining drive. The Rams marched 98 yards on 18 plays and took 8:31 off the clock before Terrence Campbell scored from one yard out with 10:50 remaining, giving Rhode Island its first lead at 10-3.
• Rhode Island extended its advantage after an Elon interception on the ensuing possession. The Rams went 61 yards in seven plays, with Budge finding Marquis Buchanan for a seven-yard touchdown to make it 17-3 with 5:51 to play.
• The Rams struck again 33 seconds later when Mitchell Garner intercepted Tanner Payne and returned it 30 yards for a touchdown, pushing the margin to 24-3.
• Elon responded with its lone touchdown drive of the afternoon. TJ Crews IV connected with Alex Voss for 35 yards before finding Zimere Winston for a 35-yard touchdown on the next play. The four-play, 74-yard drive cut the deficit to 24-10 with 3:53 remaining.
• Rhode Island closed the scoring after an interception gave the Rams possession at the Elon 3 with 1:49 left. Budge found Aboraa Kwarteng for a three-yard touchdown with 55 seconds remaining for the final 31-10 margin.

 
NOTES & STATS

• The Phoenix outgained Rhode Island 306-286, including a 123-108 advantage on the ground. Elon finished with 16 first downs compared with 15 for the Rams.
• Rhode Island scored 21 of its 31 points off Elon turnovers. The Phoenix committed five turnovers, including four interceptions and one lost fumble, while the Elon defense forced one takeaway.
• McDowell-Moore posted the first 100-yard rushing performance of his young career, carrying 23 times for a career-high 117 yards. The freshman has established a new career high in each of Elon's last two games after rushing for 88 yards at Davidson.
• Making his first career start, Crews IV completed 11-of-22 passes for 183 yards and a touchdown. Dylan Magazu led the Phoenix with three receptions for 56 yards, while Voss caught two passes for 38 yards.
• Winston's 35-yard touchdown reception accounted for Elon's lone touchdown of the afternoon.
• The Elon defense held Rhode Island scoreless in the first half and allowed just three points through the first three quarters. The Rams finished with 178 passing yards and 108 rushing yards.
• Jones recorded Elon's lone takeaway with his third-quarter interception and added two pass breakups.
• Brodie Carroll led the Phoenix with nine tackles, while Jevean Brown finished with eight. Pardue recorded six tackles and Elon's lone sack.
