WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Elon women's soccer team (4-1-2) played American (0-4-2) to a scoreless 0-0 draw Sunday at Reeves Field in its final road nonconference contest.
The Phoenix attempted 22 shots in the match, with 15 coming after halftime. American became the first team to hold Elon off the scoresheet this season after the Phoenix had netted 21 goals in its first six outings.
In goal,
Naomi Person and
Anica Carpenter combined for Elon's third clean sheet of the campaign and second in a row. It was their second combined shutout of the season.
How It Happened
- Person was called upon in the opening minutes of the match, denying Sanai Banya on the day's first scoring opportunity.
- After recording just two shots in the opening half hour, Elon began to build pressure in the closing 15 minutes of the first half. Megan Dwyer, Jordan Green, Nicole Kleyner and Lauren McCauley all registered shots before halftime but the match remained scoreless at the break.
- Elon continued to create chances in the early stages of the second half, attempting the first 11 shots of the period. Kleyner, McCauley, Jess Beck and Grace Gelhaus all put shots on goal in that stretch that American's goalkeeper Riley Molbury turned away.
- Molbury stopped another pair of chances by Isa Murdock in the 79th and 80th minutes, respectively.
- Carpenter saw her first action after entering at the start of the second half in the 84th minute, stopping a shot by Natalia Croce.
- In the final five minutes, Elon earned a pair of corner kick opportunities but could not break through. Gelhaus fired the final shot attempt of the match wide in the 89th minute and the contest ended in a goalless draw.
Notable Numbers
- This was Elon's second tie of the campaign after drawing in seven matches a season ago.
- American is the first team to hold Elon scoreless this season after the Phoenix had scored 21 goals through its first six contests. Elon's streak of scoring a goal in every second half this season also came to an end against the Eagles.
- The Phoenix has now attempted 22 shots in consecutive matches.
- Dwyer paced Elon with six shot attempts, with Gelhaus and McCauley each trying four. Kleyner took three shots for the Phoenix.
- Dwyer and Alexis Pierce both played the full 90 minutes on Elon's back line.
- Both Carpenter and Person made one save in goal for the Phoenix. This is their second combined clean sheet of the season, with the other coming Aug. 20 at South Carolina State.
- Elon has now posted back-to-back shutouts for the first time this season. The Phoenix has three clean sheets in its first seven outings.
- The Phoenix rounds out its road nonconference slate with a 2-1-2 record.
