ATHLETICS ACTIVITIES
Bylaw 17 of the NCAA manual categorizes athletics activities into three groups:

Required Athletically-related Activities (RARA)
  • Includes all countable athletically-related activities
    • Some examples
      • CARA
      • Compliance Meetings
      • Travel
      • Community Service
      • Promotional Meetings
      • Media Activities
      • Recruiting Activities
  • Impermissible during week leading up to final exams (all sports other than football)

Countable Athletically-related Activities (CARA)
  • RARA that is directed or supervised by a coach
    • Some examples
      • Practice
      • Competition
      • Film review
      • Team meetings
  • Impermissible during week leading up to final exams (all sports other than football)
  • Impermissible during vacation days when sport is out-of-season
  • Hour limitations
    • During playing season
      • Limited to four hours per day, 20 hours per week, one required day off per week (Sun-Sat)
        • Note: Competition days count as three hours - CARA is prohibited on the same day, following competition
    • Outside the playing season
      • Limited to four hours per day, eight hours per week, two required days off per week (Sun-Sat
  • Monitoring
    • Coaches must submit CARA logs via JumpForward monthly - due the 5th of every month
    • Student-Athletes must review and approve log entries via JumpForward student-athlete review

Voluntary Athletically-related Activities (VARA)
  • Initiated solely by student-athlete
  • No recording of attendance or reporting for coach
  • No associated penalties or recognition for participation
