In July 2010, Elon head women’s basketball coach
Karen Barefoot announced the addition of Sarah Gaffney to her staff as the Director of Basketball Operations. Gaffney comes to Elon after spending one season as the assistant women’s basketball coach at Guilford Technical Community College in Greensboro, N.C.
“We are extremely excited that Sarah has joined the Phoenix family as our director of basketball operations,” Barefoot said. “Sarah brings a lot of energy, passion and an incredible work ethic to this role. Sarah is a perfect fit for Elon and the women’s basketball program and I look forward to working with her this season.”
While at GTCC, Gaffney helped the Titans to the NJCAA Division I Region X Championship. The team spent much of the year ranked in the top-25 and finished the season with a record of 29-3.
Prior to her stint at GTCC, Gaffney served as the manager of the UNC Greensboro women’s basketball team for two seasons, graduating in May of 2009 with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and Community, Youth, Sport Development.
She played two seasons at Mohawk Valley Community College where she was named a first-team NJCAA All-America and was named the National Student-Athlete of the Year. In her two seasons at Mohawk Valley, she helped the team finish with a 67-3 record and set school records in three-pointers in season, career three-pointers and career assists. For her efforts in 2006, she was named the NJCCA Region III Athlete of the Year and the NJCCA Region III Women’s Basketball Player of the Year.
