MT. PLEASANT, S.C. -- Midfielder Ben Hollingsworth scored his seventh goal of the season as second-seeded College of Charleston edged seventh-seeded Elon 1-0 in the first round of the Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship.
The Cougars improve to 14-5-1 with Elon dropping to 4-11-5.
College of Charleston advances to the semifinals of the tournament and will take on the winner of the Appalachian State/Furman match. The two teams will face-off on Friday, November 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston.
Hollingsworth took a pass from midfield through the Phoenix defense before knocking a shot from the left center of the goal keeper box for the 1-0 lead at the 27:41 mark. The Cougars held off an Elon offensive push in the second half, including a number of missed attempts, to secure the win.
College of Charleston’s Keith Wiggans recorded the shutout for his 14th win on the season, tallying five saves. Elon’s Taylor Saxe grabbed six saves in the loss for the Phoenix. Charleston out-shot Elon, 13-10, with Elon coming away with the 4-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Cougar’s 14-wins is the most for Charleston since the 1995 season when they went 14-7-1.
