ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Junior center Jennifer Grant recorded a double-double with 21 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Radford University women's basketball team to a 69-60 victory over Elon College, Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium. For Grant, it was her 500th career rebound.
The Highlanders (6-11) jumped out to a 43-25 lead at the half, paced by Lorrie Mitchell who poured in 17 of her game-high 25 points in the opening period. Radford shot 17-for-29 at the break for 58.6 percent as the Fightin' Christians trailed by 18 points at the half, for a second consecutive game.
Like Wednesday's game at Winthrop, Elon put together a late rally. Trailing 43-58 with 6:41 remaining, Elon used a 9-4 run in to cut the Radford advantage to 60-52 with 3:05 left, but that's as close as the Fightin' Christians (2-15) would get.
Junior forward Amy Hill (Greenville, NC) tallied a team-best 13 points and a season-high five assists in the loss. For Hill, it was her 187th career dish, leaving her one shy of equaling Laura Foster's (1989-93) mark of 188 for eighth place on the Elon assists list. Freshman Mariam McLeod (Gastonia, NC) added 11 points, including eight in the first half.
The Fightin' Christians return to action with the first contest of a three-game road trip, beginning with Thursday night's clash at defending Big South Conference champion Liberty at 7:00 p.m. The Highlanders, winners of five of their last six, will host High Point, Wednesday night at the Dedmon Center for a 7:00 p.m. tipoff.
