RALEIGH, NC--Brian Ward went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI as 20th-ranked North Carolina State scored an 11-4 college baseball win over Elon on Tuesday afternoon at Doak Field.
Ward struck early for the Wolfpack (11-1), lacing a triple to right field with one out in the first inning to score Josh Schmitt from second base. NC State led 2-0 after the first inning, then extended the lead to 6-0 in the second inning. Matt Postell hit a two-run single, and Ward scored on a wild pitch by Elon starter Brad Pinkerton (0-1).
Elon (4-8-1) pulled within 6-2 in the fourth inning, when Whit Bryant scored on a fielder's choice by Jim Swenson. Shaun Kopczynski scored later in the inning, stealing home while Swenson intentionally got caught in a rundown.
State scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game away.
Bryant and Brian Kane were each 2-for-4 for the Fightin' Christians in the game, the first error-free outing of the year for Elon.
Pinkerton suffered the loss for Elon, giving up six runs while walking six batters in 1 2/3 innings. Brian Laniak pitched 5 1/3 innings in relief for the Fightin' Christians, giving up five hits, three runs, while walking three and striking out three.
Elon returns to action on Wednesday at East Carolina for a 3:00 pm contest.
