ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Emily Hall went 3-for-4 and drove in the winning run in the eighth inning of the second game of a college softball doubleheader to lead Elon to a twinbill split with visiting UNC Greensboro at East Field Tuesday afternoon. The Spartans (25-21) won the first game 3-2, while the Fightin' Christians captured the night-cap, 4-3 in eight innings. The Elon victory ends an eight-game losing streak, which equals the longest in school history (1990).
The Fightin' Christians (8-20) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning on Kristen Kendrick's three-run double. UNCG starter Maureen Flynn retired the first two batters of the inning, but Gina Forcinito reached on a fielding error by Judy Baker. Forcinito moved to second following a walk to Hall and both moved up a base on Kelly Lloyd's single to leftfield to load the bases for Kendrick.
Elon starter Gina Krueger cruised along while scattering two hits in the first five innings. The Spartans responded with a two-run sixth inning to draw within one. Pitcher Becky Gray, who relieved Flynn in the third after Kendrick doubled, singled to leftfield. Gray moved to third on Tracy Strommer's double and both crossed the plate on Kristy Norton's two-run double to leftfield to make the score 3-2.
UNCG tied the game in the seventh when Danielle Mirabal scored from third base on a throwing error by 3B Whitney Godfrey, one of two in the inning by the freshman, to knot the game up at 3-3. Godfrey would make up for it. Following a scoreless UNCG eighth inning, Godfrey was placed on second (extra inning tie-break), moved to third on a sacrifice by Forcinito and scored on Hall's single to centerfield to win the game.
Krueger improves her record to 4-6, allowing six hits, three runs, two earned, no walks and seven strikeouts in her eight innings of work.
In the opener, Kristin White went 2-for-3 and starting pitcher Becky Gray helped her own cause with her two-run double in the fifth inning, to send UNCG to a 3-2 win and ending a six-game losing streak for the Spartans. Gray (15-10) went the distance, striking out three, allowing nine hits, two runs, one earned and walked none. Elon hurler Jessica Vanderploeg dropped her mark to 2-9, while also tallying her third double of the season.
Kelly Lloyd posted three hits on the day which gives her 250 career total bases, which sets yet another school record (15 school records now), breaking the previous mark of 249 held by Dana Wascak (1994-97).
Kendrick finished 5-for-6 on the day with three RBI, including her second double of the season.
Elon returns to action on Thursday when they travel to Charlottesville to take on the University of Virginia for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader in the first meeting ever between the Fightin' Christians and the Cavaliers.
