ELON COLLEGE, NC -- Elon College is ranked 25th in the nation this week in a pair of NCAA Division I-AA college football polls, the school learned Monday. Elon, which is 4-0 after a 40-7 victory over North Carolina A&T on Saturday, cracked the Top 25 in both the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, as well as The Sports Network Top 25 Poll.
The ranking is the first for any Elon team at the NCAA Division I level since the program officially completed a two-year transition from Division II status in August. In addition, it marks the first time the Elon football team has been ranked in almost six years. Elon last appeared in the national rankings at the Division II level, when the Fightin' Christians were ranked 14th in the country with a 6-1 record on October 18, 1993.
Elon received 172 points in The Sports Network poll, which is comprised of 61 voting ballots from administrators and coaches at the I-AA level. Meanwhile, the Fightin' Christians earned 57 points from the 31 ballots cast in this week's USA Today/ESPN coaches poll. Georgia Southern (3-1) is the top-ranked team in both polls.
Elon plays host to the University of New Haven in its next game this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Burlington Memorial Stadium.
